Willie Snead IV Signing Highlights Miami Dolphins’ Mounting Injuries at Receiver

With three of the Miami Dolphins' top eight wide receivers unavailable, GM Chris Grier has turned to veteran Willie Snead IV.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — New Miami Dolphins wide receiver Willie Snead IV certainly has an uphill climb to make the team’s 53-man roster.

But given the team’s mounting injury concerns at the position, you can’t rule it out.

Miami Dolphins Sign WR Willie Snead IV

Snead, the nine-year veteran who has 281 career catches but just six in the last three seasons, adds needed depth to a depth chart that will likely be without three of the top eight receivers when the Dolphins reconvene for practice on Thursday.

Rookie Tahj Washington is out for the season after suffering an undisclosed injury in the spring. Projected WR3 Odell Beckham Jr. remains on the physically unable to perform list as he continues to work his way back from an injury that predated his time in Miami. And backup Erik Ezukanma was a noticeable absence at Tuesday’s practice.

That has left the Dolphins, at least in the short term, with very little behind Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle at the receiver position.

For now, Braxton Berrios and River Cracraft are presumably the team’s No. 3 and 4 wide receivers. Rookie Malik Washington seems likely to make the team, but he has had an up-and-down camp.

The others in the mix? An uninspiring group that includes Snead, Anthony Schwartz, and Braylon Sanders.

Signing Snead at this point in his career seems akin to buying a lotto ticket. Certainly, his best days are long behind him.

Snead had 1,879 yards and seven touchdowns in his first two seasons (both with the New Orleans Saints).

In the seven years since, he’s managed a total of 1,566 receiving yards and nine touchdowns.

Prior to signing with the Dolphins, Snead had two catches on three targets in two seasons spent with the San Francisco 49ers.

The most interesting part of the Dolphins’ decision to add Snead to the mix?

He’s going to catch passes from Tua Tagovailoa, whom Snead ripped on social media the night of the Dolphins’ playoff loss to the Kansas City Chiefs back in January.

In a since-deleted post to X, Snead wrote the following: “The Dolphins will be good when Tua stop[s] acting soft AF.”

To make room for Snead on the roster, the Dolphins cut defensive tackle Mario Kendricks on Wednesday.
