    Published on

Kyle Shanahan is entering his eighth season as the 49ers' head coach, but who is on his staff? Let's take a look at his assistants and new hires.

The San Francisco 49ers have had the luxury of head-coaching continuity since 2017, as Kyle Shanahan has been at the helm for the last seven seasons.

Despite other NFL teams hiring away their top assistants as head coaches and coordinators, the 49ers have consistently been a contender. The 2024 staff will feature of mixture of brand-new names and returning coaches who are now in new roles.

    • Joe Graves, Assistant Offensive Line Coach
    • Robert Turner, Running Backs Coach
    • Leonard Hankerson, Wide Receivers Coach
    • Matthew Harper, Assistant Special Teams Coach

Shanahan doesn’t have an official offensive coordinator, as the role of play-caller falls on him.

However, Foerster has additional say with the running game. Kubiak is being elevated to pass game coordinator after previously working with the quarterbacks.

Sorensen will hold down the role of defensive coordinator after Steve Wilks was fired following the Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

New Additions to the 49ers Coaching Staff

Shanahan made four new hires ahead of the upcoming season. That includes adding new faces to the defensive side, including a former NFL head coach.

Staley comes over via the Los Angeles Chargers, where he went 24-24 as a head coach. Staley took the Bolts to the 2022 postseason, where they were eliminated in the opening round by Jacksonville in a come-from-behind Jaguars win. Staley didn’t finish the 2023 season, as he was fired following the 63-21 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Dec. 15.

Lombardi is on his second stint with the 49ers, having served as an assistant there from 2013-16 before the Shanahan era. Most recently, Lombardi served as the Raiders’ offensive coordinator.

Clemmons will be joining Foerster in working with the offensive line, and he’s also coming over from the Raiders.
