MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Wes Welker caught passes from Tom Brady for six seasons, and the two were among the best quarterback-wide receiver combos of the last decade.
But for a guy who was always open during his time in New England, Welker was conspicuously unavailable for Netflix’s Roast of Tom Brady.
There’s a reason: Welker politely — but emphatically — declined an invitation to appear.
Why Wes Welker Passed on Brady Roast
Welker, who is entering his third season as the Miami Dolphins‘ wide receivers coach, had nothing good to say about the raunchy special.
Asked on the last day of Dolphins minicamp Wednesday if he had a favorite joke from the X-rated comedy showcase, Welker replied:
“Not really, I was a little disappointed in the Brady Roast. There was some funny stuff and everything, but you know, it was what it was.”
Welker didn’t elaborate on what part of the extravaganza he found lacking but did add:
“I was not asked to be a presenter. I was asked to sit on the side and get roasted, which I’m glad I wasn’t there. To each their own, I guess.”
Welker — who passed on the chance to sit on stage with former teammates Rob Gronkowski, Julian Edelman, and Randy Moss — isn’t the only one who didn’t love the special.
Brady himself expressed regrets for some of the subject matter, which included pointed and profane barbs about his divorce, the Aaron Hernandez saga, the Patriots’ cheating scandals, and much more.
“I loved when the jokes were about me,” Brady later said on The Pivot podcast. “I thought they were so fun. I didn’t like the way it affected my kids.
“So it’s the hardest part; the bittersweet aspect of when you do something that you think is one way and all of a sudden you realize ‘I wouldn’t do that again’ because of the way it affected, actually, the people I care about the most in the world.”
