Former Florida State wide receiver Johnny Wilson is a freak athlete who proved it once again at the NFL Combine.
While Wilson is known for being a big-bodied receiver during his time at FSU, his performance at the Combine raised some eyebrows for those who got to witness it.
Here is more on Wilson’s athletic testing.
Johnny Wilson’s NFL Combine Performance
There have been many questions in the NFL scouting world about Wilson and where he fits at the next level.
At 6’6″ and 231 pounds, some have been quick to point out that a switch to tight end may be in his future.
However, after his performance at this year’s NFL Combine, it has gotten tougher to fit Wilson into a box as he continues to prove to those around the NFL that he is a rare draft prospect.
How Fast Is Wilson?
The Florida State receiver ran a 4.53-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine. At his size, his ability to run that fast had those around the league perplexed by his ability.

If nothing else, Wilson came out of the NFL Combine proving that he is an athletic freak with a unique frame at the WR position and can be used in many different ways.
Whether it is going up to get tough contested catches, or being a dangerous red zone threat, Wilson’s size, strength, and speed is a combination not many defenses have an answer for.
How Old Is Wilson?
If there is any knock on Wilson coming out of the Combine, it may just be his age. Wilson will enter the league at 23 years old, which is considered somewhat old for a first-year player.
In a league that views 30 years old as the proverbial cliff that players fall off of skill-wise, Wilson’s perceived window of his prime seems to be less than those around him who are also entering the NFL Draft.
Wilson’s Latest Scouting Report
Wilson’s tape, combined with his unique frame, makes for a unique film study for those around the league. Wilson was able to use his unique traits to overpower college defenders. And while he still presents a different type of challenge to defenses at the NFL level, it won’t come as easily for Wilson at the next level.
However he is used, Wilson is going to be an exciting addition to any offense, says Pro Football Network Draft Analyst Ian Cummings.

“Wilson grades out as a fringe top-100 prospect who could go in the mid-to-late Day 2 range, or sneak past the Day 3 boundary. In a deeper WR class, his physical profile and role projection are more confined and specific than others’ — but his upside is undeniable,” Cummings starts.
“As a weapon, Wilson is exciting — and he can be used with versatility, lining up either on the boundary, in the slot, or hugging the line. He also provides additional value as an elite blocking presence,” Cummings continues.
“Wilson may project better as a move-TE at the next level. But either as a mismatch-hunting movement-Z WR or as a position-diverse weapon in a rotation, Wilson’s physicality simply overwhelms defenders, and he has the true speed and explosiveness to capitalize as an offensive sparkplug and utility blocker.”
How much of Wilson’s game will translate at the next level is unknown, and which team takes him will be important. However, teams take chances on unique skill sets, and Wilson has that in spades.
