Bucky Irving’s 40 Time: How Fast Is the 2024 NFL Draft Prospect?

    Published on

Bucky Irving was one of college football's more electrifying players last season. What was his 40 time ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft?

Bucky Irving was one of the more electric running backs in college football last season. His ability to win in the open field as a receiver and running back makes him a hot commodity during the 2024 NFL Draft.

As the selection process gets closer, though, just how fast is the Oregon star, and how good does he expect to be in the NFL?

    Bucky Irving’s Scouting Combine Measurables

Irving is an interesting prospect. At just 5’9″ and 192 pounds, the Ducks star is going to be one of the more undersized players in the game. At Oregon, it wasn’t a problem at least.

Irving led all running backs in college football last season in receptions with 56, while adding 413 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns. His 1,180 rushing yards and 11 rushing touchdowns helped lead the Ducks to the second-best total offense in the nation at 531.4 yards per game.

After his successful season, scouts believed a strong showing at the 2024 NFL Combine would help his draft stock.

    That didn’t exactly happen, though.

    How Fast Is Irving?

Irving ran his 40-yard dash at a 4.55-second clip during the 2024 NFL Combine.

That total was behind others like Monmouth’s Jaden Shirden, Texas’ Keilan Robinson, Florida State’s Trey Benson, and Tennessee’s Jaylen Wright. In total, Irving finished with the 14th-fastest time at the position — less than ideal for a player whose game-tape paints him as a matchup nightmare in the open field.

    How Old Is Irving?

There is some good news for Irving’s development. The young running back is just 21 years old and will be 22 by the time the 2024 NFL season kicks off. While young, there is clearly a sign that the Oregon runner will need plenty of development at his position.

    Irving’s Latest Scouting Report

According to Pro Football Network Draft Analyst Ian Cummings, Irving is projected to be a potential Day 2 pick with plenty of question marks about his overall size and skillset heading into the NFL.

“Irving has some impressive reps on tape, but the tape doesn’t exactly suggest his vision is elite,” Cummings said. “His creativity and elusiveness in space make his lack of explosiveness in the vertical jump (29.5”), board jump (9’7”), and 40-yard dash (4.55 seconds) a bit of a disappointment.”

Should Irving look to help an NFL team immediately, his ability as a pass catcher will be helpful but could cap his ability to be an every-down player.
