The New York Giants are interested in selecting a quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft. But how interested, exactly?
Big Blue has taken pre-draft meetings with all of this year’s potential Round 1 QBs, but they might have to move up the board to land one of Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, or J.J. McCarthy.
Will the Giants be willing to move up from No. 6 to land a franchise quarterback? Here’s what New York might be thinking on Draft Night.
Giants Likely To Pass on Round 1 QB?
The Giants can designate incumbent QB Daniel Jones as a post-June 1 release after the 2024 campaign and move on from the former first-round pick. They’d take on $47 million in dead money by doing so. Still, cutting Jones next offseason remains New York’s most likely course of action unless he rebounds this year.
While the Giants might jump at the chance to land one of the draft’s top four quarterbacks if they fall to the sixth pick, Caleb Williams, Daniels, Maye, and McCarthy are widely expected to come off the board at picks No. 1, 2, 3, and 4.
Trading up doesn’t seem to be an option for New York. Meanwhile, “a high-ranking official” with the Giants told ESPN’s Matt Miller that the team doesn’t plan to select a quarterback in the first round.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter passed along similar intel earlier this week, speculating that New York will eschew a QB at No. 6 in favor of filling other areas on its roster.
Schoen also recently suggested the Giants would go elsewhere with their first-round choice.
“We don’t wanna be up here again — we don’t want to be picking in the top 10,” Schoen told Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated. “We have multiple needs. We are going into Year 3. People assume we’re going quarterback, but we have other needs.
“If the quarterbacks go 1–4, then we’re getting the second-best position player, not quarterback, at six, which is OK, too. That player will really help us.”
The Giants will cross their fingers and hope Marvin Harrison Jr. somehow falls to pick No. 6. More likely, they’ll be deciding between fellow wideouts Malik Nabers and Rome Odunze when their slot comes up on Draft Night.
New York could consider adding a quarterback in Round 2, especially if Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. or Oregon’s Bo Nix are still on the board.
The Giants hold the 47th overall selection in the second round. Miller proposed that Big Blue could make a small move up at the top of Round 2 to find a signal-caller, similar to what the Tennessee Titans did to land Will Levis in the 2023 NFL Draft.
The Titans sent pick Nos. 41 and 72 and a 2024 third-rounder to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for 33 and 81, allowing them to grab Levis at the beginning of Day 2.
New York could follow that plan and try to trade with a team that already has a young quarterback, like the Carolina Panthers (picks No. 33 and 39), Los Angeles Chargers (37), or Green Bay Packers (41).
