The San Antonio Brahmas are among the XFL teams that are helping comprise the UFL merger.
Before their second season of existence officially begins on Easter Sunday, it’s time to get to know who will be leading the Brahmas’ offense: quarterback Chase Garbers.
Is Chase Garbers New to the UFL?
Sunday’s game against the D.C. Defenders will mark Garbers’ UFL debut.
He came over to San Antonio after signing his contract back on Jan. 19. Garbers was among 42 players who agreed to a deal with the league that day.
Garbers crosses over to the UFL after suiting up for the Las Vegas Raiders. He joined the Silver and Black as an undrafted free agent out of the University of California, signing his deal on May 12, 2022.
He originally began his Raiders career backing up Derek Carr. He managed to earn his roster promotion on Dec. 31, 2022, after the Raiders decided to bench Carr for the rest of the season. Garbers became the backup to new Las Vegas starter Jarrett Stidham for the rest of the 2022 season.
Following the 2022 campaign, Garbers was released on July 25 before training camp but was eventually re-signed on Aug. 1. Then, as teams were forced to complete their 53-man active roster, Garbers was once again released on Aug. 27.
Garbers now gets his first starting nod in a live game since Dec. 2021 in his final season at Cal.
Garbers’ College Production
Garbers became one of the first recruit signings for Justin Wilcox in Cal’s 2017 class.
He established himself as a four-star quarterback prospect out of Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach, Calif. Garbers joined a Golden Bears recruiting class that featured two future NFL defensive backs in Elijah Hicks (Chicago Bears) and Daniel Scott (Indianapolis Colts).
After redshirting in his true freshman year, Garbers went on to take the starting reins in the 2018 season. He threw 1,506 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions while leading Cal to the Cheez-It Bowl.
The 2019 campaign became one of Garbers’ best seasons. Despite missing some brief action with a shoulder injury, he still managed to throw 14 TDs, only three INTs, and 1,772 passing yards, leading the Golden Bears to an 8-5 mark, which was Cal’s most regular-season wins since 2015.
Garbers only played in four games in the truncated 2020 season as Cal went 1-3 overall. He threw for 771 total yards, six touchdowns, and three picks.
In his final collegiate season, Garbers accumulated 2,531 yards and tossed 16 touchdowns — both were new career-highs. He was picked off eight times, and Cal ended the year 5-7 overall.
Garbers even became known as a runner in Berkeley. He ended his career tacking on 1,174 rushing yards and a combined 11 touchdowns, including the career-high four rushing TDs he delivered in his final season.
Once again, Garbers hasn’t started in a live game since the final college game of his Golden Bears career: a 24-14 home win over USC on Dec. 4, 2021. That night saw Garbers complete 18 of 21 passes for 177 yards.
