The Miami Dolphins have impressive firepower on their offense already, but as the NFL Owners Meetings in Orlando, Florida, kickoff, head coach Mike McDaniel was quick to point out that they aren’t done in adding more talent to their wide receiver room.
While meeting with a contingent of media, McDaniel spoke on the team’s interest in Odell Beckham Jr. and how close they are to signing the veteran WR.
Mike McDaniel Speaks on Odell Beckham Jr. Visit
While the days of Beckham being one of the most dynamic NFL receivers are long gone, he can still provide value to any offense. This is a sentiment that McDaniel understands and spoke about on Monday morning.
Meeting with a contingent of media, McDaniel was asked about OBJ’s reported visit to Miami, and where they currently stand with the wideout. McDaniel made it clear that both he and the team want OBJ in the fold for 2024.
“Things are great with him. We did make him an offer,” McDaniel started. “Business takes time, especially with players such as him, who have a phenomenal career who has really good football in front of him and has options.
“I think those conversations will be ongoing, and we’ll see where they go, I don’t live in a world of ‘crystal balling,’ and I do stay in my lane as a coach.
“I’m definitely ready to coach him if we come to an agreement, I think both sides are trying to work toward that to make it happen.”
McDaniel makes it clear that he doesn’t have all the answers right now, but made his stance clear that he’s ready and excited to coach OBJ if the two sides can come to an agreement.
Beckham’s Fit in the Dolphins’ Offense
Beckham’s visit came on Thursday of last week, and Pro Football Network discussed the meeting, and how he would fit in Miami’s offense.
PFN’s Dolphins reporter Adam Beasley spoke about Miami’s need for a reliable third option at wide receiver behind Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, and how OBJ could fit into those plans for McDaniel’s offense.
“But they still lacked a true No. 3 option. Beckham would fill that void in a big way. He’d be a part-time player in Miami, giving the Dolphins the big-bodied target on the outside that they lack with Hill and Waddle as their top two options.
“Expect a similar workload to what he got in his only year in Baltimore when he set a career-high in yards per catch (16.1). Beckham logged just 465 snaps (an average of 33 in the 14 games he played), and the Dolphins probably won’t need much more than that out of him in 2024.”
Beasley goes on to speak to Beckham’s position flex and how his versatility could go a long way in Miami’s offense.
“And the most appealing part of this potential marriage? Position flexibility. While Beckham is known for his explosive downfield plays, he has done good work out of the slot. Putting him, Hill, and Waddle on the field at the same time with little idea of who is going to line up where would make it a big-time challenge for opposing defenses to key in on tendencies.”
As many things do in the NFL, Beasley speaks to the fact it will come down to money. And while McDaniel spoke about the offer being on the table for OBJ, he understands that they may not be the only ones.
“The question at this point isn’t if Beckham, who according to Bleacher Report is finally fully healthy, can help the Dolphins (he obviously can). The question is, at what price? Spotrac estimates Beckham’s market value at one year for $11.9 million. That’s probably a bit steep for the Dolphins, but they do have factors working to their advantage.”

How it all unfolds remains to be seen, but there is interest, and a natural fit in Miami for Beckham if he decides to sign on the dotted line and take his talents to South Beach.
