Who Will Sign Michael Gallup in Free Agency? Possible Landing Spots Include Ravens, Panthers, Jaguars

Michael Gallup saw plenty of ups and downs across six years with the Cowboys. Where might the veteran WR end up signing after his release?

Michael Gallup has had his ups and downs across the first six years of his NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys and is now looking for a new home after being released by the franchise last week. Which teams might consider signing Gallup in free agency?

Gallup showed an ability to be productive early in his NFL career that many teams might still value despite his recent downtick.

The six-year veteran racked up career-highs of 66 catches for 1,107 yards and six touchdowns during his second professional season in 2019 and followed that up with 59 catches for 843 yards and five touchdowns in 2020.

He has failed to eclipse even 500 yards since then, however, with just nine games played in 2021, 14 in 2022, and even 17 appearances, including 13 starts, in 2023. He posted 34 catches for 418 yards and two touchdowns this past season as the Cowboys’ fourth-leading receiver behind CeeDee Lamb, Jake Ferguson, and Brandin Cooks.

It’s largely been a struggle for Gallup in the wake of an ACL tear he suffered in Week 17 of the 2021 season, one that left him recovering from it for much of 2022. He then saw a limited role in 2023 but did remain healthy.

That decreased role made it sensible for Dallas to move on, though Gallup’s past production could make him an intriguing target for some teams, at the right price.

    Baltimore Ravens

As was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Baltimore is scheduled to visit with Gallup on Thursday. The pairing makes sense, as the Ravens could use an outside receiver with a veteran skillset.

With Zay Flowers, Rashod Bateman, and Nelson Agholor set to man three-wide sets, the Ravens could use another vertical threat to deepen an improved but still-thin receiver room that’s expected to lose Odell Beckham Jr. Gallup’s addition could also give the team more flexibility in the NFL Draft as well, with a less pressing need to add a playmaker early.

    Carolina Panthers

The Panthers may be the most likely destination for Gallup after reports emerged late last week that Carolina had scheduled a visit with him for this week.

It’s a fit that makes plenty of sense in theory as the Panthers look to build up a more suitable supporting cast around Bryce Young to see what the young quarterback is truly capable of accomplishing. Carolina has already added three offensive linemen to bolster a porous front along with trading for wide receiver Diontae Johnson, but Gallup could be another player worth taking a flyer on, giving Young another weapon to work with.

    Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars lost their No. 1 wide receiver in free agency as Calvin Ridley signed a hefty contract with the Tennessee Titans, leaving Jacksonville in need of help at the position.

Although Christian Kirk is one strong returner in the room, taking a flyer on Gallup could certainly make sense for the Jaguars as they look to retool Trevor Lawrence’s core of playmakers and continue taking steps forward. With many of the splashy signings of free agency complete, this seems a more sensible way for Jacksonville to address the receiver position after it seemingly balked at Ridley’s asking price.

    Los Angeles Chargers

Los Angeles is one of the teams most in need of receiver help at this point after trading Keenan Allen to the Chicago Bears and cutting Mike Williams, two moves made for salary cap purposes.

First-year head coach Jim Harbaugh and Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz are in the process of reshaping the team around Justin Herbert, and Gallup could provide a steady veteran presence amid that process. Los Angeles will likely look to draft one or more receivers as well, but having a player with Gallup’s experience around would certainly provide value for younger members of the room, on and off the field.
