The Miami Dolphins‘ secondary in 2024 could look a lot like the Buffalo Bills’ secondary was supposed to look like in 2024.
Two ex-Bills safeties are now on the Dolphins’ radar — and perhaps soon, their roster.
The most definitive? Jordan Poyer, whom PFN can confirm has agreed to a one-year deal with the Dolphins. He is on track to start alongside Jevon Holland in the Dolphins’ new-look secondary.
Miami Dolphins, Jordan Poyer Agree on 1-Year Deal
Poyer is available because the Bills cut him last week to save nearly $6 million. He is a former Pro Bowler and All-Pro who has 24 career interceptions and 54 passes defensed.
He’s also 32 years old, meaning that this is a stop-gap move by a Dolphins team that lost Brandon Jones to the Denver Broncos this week and could lose DeShon Elliott as well.
Poyer is one of two ex-Bills safeties traveling to Miami Gardens, Fla., this offseason. The other? Siran Neal, who would be a key special teams pickup.
NFL Network reports Neal was in town Tuesday to meet with the Dolphins before flying to Atlanta on Wednesday for a sit-down with the Falcons.
The Dolphins apparently favored Poyer — who will not detract from the Dolphins’ 2025 compensatory pick haul because he’s a street free agent — over a deep group of veteran safeties.
The list entering Tuesday included Kamren Curl (Washington Commanders), Justin Simmons (Denver Broncos), Quandre Diggs (Seattle Seahawks), Julian Blackmon (Indianapolis Colts), Jordan Whitehead (New York Jets), and Jordan Fuller (Los Angeles Rams).
The Dolphins are currently projected to earn three 2025 comp picks — two thirds (for Christian Wilkins and Robert Hunt) and a sixth (for Brandon Jones).
The Dolphins have also lost key defensive players Andrew Van Ginkel and Raekwon Davis. However, their departures have been offset by the addition of linebacker Jordyn Brooks and guard Aaron Brewer.

Poyer won 11 of his 13 career games against the Dolphins, with three interceptions, four tackles for loss, and eight passes defensed.
- The Dolphins made one other move Tuesday evening: They agreed to terms on a contract to bring back running back Salvon Ahmed, per The 33rd team. Ahmed rushed for 593 yards and one touchdown in his first four NFL seasons, all spent with the Dolphins.
