Washington Commanders Free Agency Tracker: Signings, Rumors, News, and More

It's a new day for the Washington Commanders with Dan Quinn looking to turn their fortunes around. Here's the latest free agency news and rumors.

The Washington Commanders are heading into 2024 under a new regime. With Dan Quinn now the head coach in D.C., things are set to look vastly different than they did under former head coach Ron Rivera.

With the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and an enormous amount of cap space at their disposal, the Commanders have a chance to head into 2024 putting themselves in a position to be real contenders for years to come. It is an important offseason for the franchise and the pressure to get it right is evident.

With free agency set to begin in just a few days, let’s look at the latest news and notes coming out of the nation’s capital.

Washington Commanders Free Agency News and Rumors

Most Cap Space in the NFL

The belief that the Commanders are set to be big players in free agency is rooted in the fact that they have the most cap space in the NFL by a wide margin. The team currently has $96 million available to them, according to Spotrac, which puts them at $16 million more than the next closest team.

With a roster that has plenty of needs to fill talent-wise and a premium position in the upcoming draft, Quinn and Co. could choose to be aggressive in the free-agent market in an attempt to make a quick turnaround.

Just how much Quinn and the front office are willing to push it in 2024 remains to be seen, but with clear changes being made from the top down, the Commanders are a team to watch when it comes to free-agent activity.

    Signed Veteran TE Zach Ertz

While there is still more work to do on the free agent front, the Commanders didn’t waste any time adding talent to their roster they know well. They’ve signed long-time Philadelphia Eagles tight end Zach Ertz to a one-year deal worth up to $5 million.

Ertz is entering his 13th season in the NFL, spending the majority of that time with the division-rival Eagles. His most recent stop was with the Detroit Lions, as he signed with the team for the playoff run. However, what made Washington an attractive landing spot for the veteran is the familiarity he has with the new Commanders’ offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury.

Kingsbury was the head coach in Arizona during Ertz’s time with the Cardinals, where the TE spent three seasons in the desert and played under Kingsbury for 21 games during that time. Ertz is a savvy veteran looking for more stability later in his career, and with an obvious need at the position for the team, Ertz can come right in and make an impact.
