North Carolina Tar Heels quarterback Drake Maye was scheduled to perform for NFL evaluators at the 2024 NFL Combine in Indianapolis on Saturday. But when the dust settled in Indianapolis, Maye was noticeably absent during the 40-yard dash and other tests ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Drake Maye Doesn’t Perform at the NFL Combine
Maye opted not to participate in any of the testing workouts at the 2024 NFL Combine. The North Carolina QB may opt to perform those drills at the Tar Heels Pro Day.
For Maye, the Combine was always set to be an in-person event and not an on-field display. He had little left to showcase in terms of his arm talent, having shown off his arm plenty over his three-year career with the Tar Heels.

Maye, as is the growing trend for top quarterbacks, had been rumored to have made his decision to sit out the agility drills well in advance of the Combine. While the Combine is more about proving prior beliefs on prospects, players like Maye who have an ample amount of film, have opted to test in the friendly confines of their home stadium or with their former program.
Despite some clamoring for him to test in Indianapolis, it’s hardly seen as a slight on his resume for a player like Maye.
Drake Maye’s 2024 NFL Draft Scouting Report
Drake Maye is the QB1 of the 2024 NFL Draft, according to PFN Draft Analyst Ian Cummings. The North Carolina QB is also a top-three prospect, along with Marvin Harrison Jr. and Caleb Williams. It’s close between him and Williams for QB1, but Maye arguably has the best balance of physical talent and operational utility.
Maye bears some similarities to former Oregon Ducks and current Los Angeles Chargers QB Justin Herbert. He’s a QB who doesn’t always rely on his athleticism stylistically but has the high-end overarching tools to be a passer who elevates his squad and creates off-script, while also operating at a high level within the offensive structure.

Maye has all of the qualities of a franchise QB. Not only that, but he’s one of the best QB prospects to come out over the past few cycles, rivaling names like Trevor Lawrence, Joe Burrow, and C.J. Stroud.
