The NFL Scouting Combine is always an opportunity for players to show off their athleticism. That’s especially true of the 40-yard dash. While players don’t run 40 yards in a straight line often in the game, their form, technique, and overall speed can influence the way teams view prospects. However, participating in these drills can be a risk, as was the case for Clemson cornerback Nate Wiggins.

What Happened to Nate Wiggins?
Wiggins’ betting line for his 40-yard dash was 4.55 seconds. Wiggins scoffed at that, saying he’d run much quicker. That was true as he ran a blazing 4.28-second 40-yard dash, reaching 24 miles per hour in the process.
However, Wiggins may have injured himself and has been ruled out of the rest of the NFL Combine, per NFL Network’s Stacy Dales.

Originally, NFL Network reported that Wiggins “heard his groin pop” after completing his first 40-yard dash attempt, but per The Athletic’s Nick Baumgardner, the injury is actually a hip flexor. That would be a better outcome for the Tigers’ defensive back.
While the Clemson defensive back performed admirably in the athleticism portion of the NFL Combine, he weighed in a bit light, tipping the scales at just 173 pounds. That is only in the seventh percentile among defensive backs, according to his Relative Athletic Score.
Will Wiggins Work Out at Clemson’s Pro Day?
Wiggins will still sit out the rest of the NFL Combine, but he plans on working out at Clemson’s Pro Day later this spring, according to several league sources.

Wiggins is likely a first-round pick, so he could choose to sit out. However, he’s already expressed his intentions to finish his athletic testing later. Clemson has not yet announced a date for their Pro Day, but last season, it was in mid-March, just two weeks after the NFL Combine.
