What happens when you turn peanut butter M&M's into diamonds? Check out M&M's Super Bowl commercial as they unveil the Ring of Comfort.

M&M’s, the flagship product of Mars, Incorporated, has been a mainstay in the Super Bowl commercial scene. The famous candies are back for Super Bowl 58 with a brand new prize for those who fell just short of winning. Let’s look at the M&M’s Super Bowl commercial for this year in the 30-second “Almost Champions” spot.

How Was the New Ring Made in M&M’s Super Bowl Commercial?

M&M’s has been getting creative lately, adding a whole line of flavored M&M’s highlighted by the successful peanut butter M&M. However, the company took that further over the last few months by creating peanut butter M&M minis. In the Super Bowl 58 spot, the candies have taken it to the max, mixing science and peanut butter to create diamonds.

Yes, while not technically accurate, through various processes in a lab, you can pressurize and cook peanut butter to make diamonds. The M&M’s have taken those diamonds, and with the help of Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino, unveiled their Ring of Comfort, made for the almost champions.

The M&M’s Super Bowl commercial begins with Marino walking down a hallway and telling everyone about the new ring. While Marino played in Super Bowl 19, the legendary passer would lose to Joe Montana and the San Francisco 49ers in his only chance to lift a Lombardi Trophy.

Marino then gives a brief overview of the science to show the process the company went through to make and develop the ring, where we get to see brown and yellow M&M. He then walks into a room with other almost champions as they “polish” the diamonds with their sighs of defeat.

Next, 15-year receiver Terrell Owens is shown. TO played for five different NFL teams and went to Super Bowl 39 while with the Philadelphia Eagles. The Hall of Fame receiver had nine receptions for 122 yards, but Philadelphia fell to the New England Patriots 24-21.

Then, the camera transitions to Buffalo Bills’ and Virginia Tech Hokies’ legendary defensive end, Bruce Smith, or “The Sack Man.” While injuries forced Smith to miss some of the first Super Bowl seasons, the Hall of Fame DE was a fixture on Buffalo’s defense during its stretch of four consecutive Super Bowl appearances. The Bills would infamously lose all four, and Smith can be heard saying, “Almost,” as he sighs into the diamonds.

Marino then shows it’s not just the Super Bowl runner-ups that have fallen short, as actress Scarlett Johansson is with them. While she has a few awards in her acting career, she lost the biggest ones. Johansson was nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Actress in “Marriage Story” and Best Supporting Actress in “Jojo Rabbit.”

While coming up short, the red M&M drives the point home, further explaining they were both in the same year. He gets a piercing side-eye from Johansson but makes up for it by sneaking her a Ring of Comfort as the commercial ends.

Mars knocked it out of the park with the 2024 M&M’s Super Bowl commercial.
