Reid was born on March 19, 1958, in Los Angeles. He attended John Marshall High School where he worked as a vendor at Dodger Stadium as a teenager. He also played youth sports, where he appeared on Monday Night Football at 13 years old, participating in the Punt, Pass, and Kick competition.
After high school, Reid attended Glendale Community College where he played offensive tackle. He planned to transfer to Stanford but injured his knee and ended up going to BYU instead. He didn’t play often but was close to the coaching staff.
Reid started his coaching career shortly after graduating from BYU as a graduate assistant with the team in 1982. He then got his first position coach job as the offensive line coach at San Francisco State from 1983-1985.
Reid’s next three stops would also be as an offensive line coach. He was with Northern Arizona in 1986, UTEP from 1987-1988, and Missouri from 1989-1991. His stop with Missouri was the final time Reid ever coached at the college level.
Reid started his NFL career with the Green Bay Packers as an assistant offensive line and tight ends coach from 1992 to 1996. He then earned a promotion to quarterbacks coach and assistant head coach from 1997 to 1998.
Finally, in 1999, the Philadelphia Eagles hired Reid as their head coach. He was with Philadelphia from 1999 to 2012, accumulating a 130-93-1 regular season record. In addition to being head coach, Reid was named the executive vice president of football operations
However, following a 4-12 season in 2012, the Eagles decided not to extend Reid’s contract. In addition to the on-field performance, Reid suffered from personal life difficulties, including the passing of his oldest son, Garrett.
