Andy Reid has put together quite the resume from his lengthy career as an NFL head coach, finding plenty of success leading the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs for a combined two and a half decades. From humble beginnings as a graduate assistant in the collegiate ranks to being regarded as one of the league’s top coaches, Reid has just about seen it all throughout his numerous years in the profession.
Examining Andy Reid’s Lengthy Coaching Career
Reid, now 65 years old, began his storied coaching career as a graduate assistant at BYU in 1982. He quickly moved to a role as offensive coordinator/offensive line coach at the Division II program San Francisco State, spending three years at the school.
Then came a trip up to the FCS level with a one-year run as an offensive line coach at Northern Arizona before serving as an FBS offensive line coach for the next five years with stints at UTEP and Missouri.
Reid got his first NFL coaching gig in 1992, a decade after his coaching career had begun, serving as the tight ends and assistant offensive line coach for the Green Bay Packers. He was part of the staff that guided Green Bay to back-to-back Super Bowl appearances in the 1996 and 1997 seasons, winning it all the first time around in Super Bowl 31.
Reid transitioned roles to become the Packers’ quarterbacks coach for the 1997 and 1998 seasons, helping fuel two of Brett Favre’s most productive professional seasons, including his third straight MVP campaign in 1997.
Those successes earned Reid his first crack as a head coach when he was hired to lead the Philadelphia Eagles on Jan. 11, 1999.
It was the start of what would be a lengthy tenure in Philadelphia as Reid led the franchise for 14 seasons through the 2012 campaign. He led the Eagles to four straight NFC Championship Game appearances from 2001-2004, breaking through for a Super Bowl appearance in the final year of that run before taking a 24-21 loss to the New England Patriots.

Deep postseason runs became more difficult to find in Reid’s latter years with Philadelphia, however, as he made just one more trip to the conference title game in 2008. Reid’s time with the franchise ultimately came to an unceremonious end in 2012 when he was fired.
He was quickly hired to be the Kansas City Chiefs’ head coach and has spent the last 11 seasons leading the franchise.
Following some rough years to start his tenure, Reid began a still-running streak of now nine straight playoff appearances, making the postseason in 2015. Kansas City has reached at least the AFC Championship Game in each of the last six seasons, including now four trips to the Super Bowl with two wins thus far.
Reid aims for his third Super Bowl win in the last five years when the Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers, the team Kansas City beat for Reid’s first title in 2019.
Time will tell whether the longtime head coach lifts the Lombardi Trophy once again — or if he might call it quits with another ring — but Reid has certainly accomplished plenty throughout his long coaching career.
