Tony Romo has become one of sports’ most renowned broadcasters, but before taking to the booth, he made his name as a starting quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys.
His talents can be found commentating weekly on NFL games, and Romo’s voice will be heard in Super Bowl 58 when he announces the matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs against San Francisco 49ers.
Over a playing and TV career, Romo has earned a fair amount of money. How much is he paid, and what’s his net worth?
Tony Romo’s Salary
Unsurprisingly, Romo is one of the highest-paid NFL analysts after signing a mega contract with CBS.
Andrew Marchand of the New York Post reported in 2020 that Romo signed a $17 million per year deal, with the length of the pact rumored to be ten years.
Alongside Jim Nantz, Romo has become one of the most high-profile commentators, and his arrangement with CBS reflects the value he brings to the station.
The contract was the biggest for any commentator across all sports, with CBS having paid a hefty price for the former Cowboys QB to prevent him from becoming a broadcasting free agent.
According to the New York Post, Romo was expected to negotiate big paydays with ESPN and Disney. However, a clause in his contract meant that CBS had to be notified of what price it would take to get Romo to remain with the network.
“CBS was willing to meet the around $17 million per year and $100-plus million figure that blocked out ESPN from even getting a chance,” reported Marchand.
That retention clause was placed in Romo’s inital deal with CBS, which was worth $10 million total over three seasons.
Considering Romo earned about $127.4 million over his 14-season playing career in Dallas, his current salary equates to being more lucrative for the former QB. Romo earned more than $17 million annually in just three seasons as a player (2007, 2013, and 2015), according to Spotrac.
As an undrafted free agent out of college, Romo initially signed a two-year $540,000 contract with the Cowboys. His first big contract came when he signed a six-year, $67.5 million deal in October 2007.
Romo eventually negotiated an even bigger contract in March 2013, signing a $108 million extension in Dallas. He ultimately retired from the NFL following the 2016 season.
Romo’s Net Worth
Celebrity Net Worth estimates Romo’s net worth to be $70 million and is calculated from his salaries across his playing and TV career, as well as investments and sponsorships.
