Could Eric Bieniemy Return to Kansas City Chiefs in 2024?

The news that Eric Bieniemy addressed the Kansas City Chiefs the night before the AFC Championship Game spurred speculation that a KC reunion is possible.

LAKE LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid had a very special guest address his team the night before their AFC Championship Game against the Baltimore Ravens:

Eric Bieniemy, the longtime Chiefs assistant whose stint as Washington Commanders offensive coordinator ended earlier this week after just one year. (New Commanders coach Dan Quinn formally fired Bieniemy Monday. Kliff Kingsbury will be Washington’s OC in 2024.)

Details on Eric Bieniemy’s Visit With Kansas City Chiefs

Bieniemy spent time with his old team at the Chiefs’ Baltimore hotel on the evening of Jan. 27, per assistant Connor Embree.

Was it the first step on Bieniemy’s road back to Kansas City?

“I can’t [say] because we don’t have any spots right now,” Reid told reporters here Wednesday in his penultimate news conference ahead of Super Bowl 58. “But I would tell you I think his coaching future is great. Always been a big fan of his and the things that he can do.”

Bieniemy, who was KC’s offensive coordinator for five years and its running backs coach for a half-decade before that, was a candidate for the Commanders’ opening but was always a real longshot to get the job.

Even still, Bieniemy seems likely to land somewhere this cycle.

“He’s still up for a couple of jobs,” Reid said.

And if he doesn’t get one of them, there’s always the chance Reid simply creates one to bring back a locker-room favorite.

“It’s always great to have EB in the building, just being there,” said Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. “And the energy that he brings, the mentality that he brings, you can just feel.”

“… He loves it,” he added. “He loves being there. He loves being a part of the team and, and being a part of that culture. And so just having him back in the building was really cool and listening to him talk and his energy. I’m excited for him to continue to coach football and continue to make an impact on the game.”

Added Embree: “It was good to see him. He was here forever. Made great relationships with everyone in the building. Not just the coaching staff. He didn’t care who you were. He always treated everyone the same anytime you got someone like that and leaves, anytime you see everyone is excited. He brings energy. … He put a smile on everyone’s face.”
