Why Was Patrick Mahomes Sr. Arrested? Chiefs QB’s Father Potentially Facing Jail Time After Latest Arrest

Patrick Mahomes Sr. was arrested on Saturday with the Super Bowl just one week away.

Patrick Mahomes Sr., the father of the Kansas City Chiefs‘ two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback, was arrested on suspicion of DWI in Texas on Saturday. It’s now his alleged third DWI arrest.

Where Patrick Mahomes Sr. Was Driving When Arrested

According to online records obtained by the Kansas City Star, Mahomes Sr. was arrested by the Tyler Police Department while driving in Tyler, Texas. He was booked into Smith County Jail.

Police stated that Mahomes Sr. was “driving while intoxicated.” Smith County court records revealed that the father of the Chiefs’ passer had his second DWI charge in 2018. He chose to plead guilty and was sentenced to 40 days in county jail.

Mahomes Sr. served his time on weekends between the timeframe of February 2019 to February 2020, per court records.

Neither the younger Patrick Mahomes nor the Chiefs have yet to comment on the matter. KYTX CBS 19 in Tyler reported that the father’s bail is set for $10,000.

However, considering this is Mahomes Sr.’s third alleged arrest on DWI, he could face some serious consequences per Texas law. Mahomes Sr. could get handed between two to 10 years in state prison and not a county jail. Even if he’s given probation, Mahomes Sr. would still need to serve at least 10 days in a jail cell as part of a plea agreement, which usually cannot be waived.

Arrest Comes as Super Bowl Looms

For the Chiefs and Mahomes Sr., the news comes with the Super Bowl one week away in Las Vegas against the San Francisco 49ers.

Mahomes Sr. — who played Major League Baseball as a pitcher for the Minnesota Twins, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs, and Pittsburgh Pirates — has been a regular attendee of his son’s football games since his NFL career began.
