With the Washington Commanders hiring Dan Quinn to be their next head coach, the 2024 NFL coaching carousel has officially ended. The Quinn hire officially marks eight new head coaches heading into the 2024 season.
Another thing the Quinn hire means is that Bill Belichick won’t be a head coach for the upcoming season. How are fans reacting to the legendary coach not getting a job?

As mentioned, coming into the 2024 offseason, eight HC jobs opened up. Here’s the direction each team went:
- Los Angeles Chargers: Jim Harbaugh
- Carolina Panthers: Dave Canales
- Washington Commanders: Dan Quinn
- Atlanta Falcons: Raheem Morris
- New England Patriots: Jerod Mayo
- Las Vegas Raiders: Antonio Pierce
- Tennessee Titans: Brian Callahan
- Seattle Seahawks: Mike Macdonald
With the cycle wrapping up, it means that on top of Belichick, Mike Vrabel, Pete Carroll, Aaron Glenn, Ben Johnson, Anthony Weaver, Eric Bieniemy, Ejiro Evero, and Mike Kafka, among others, will not be head coaches in 2024.
“Bill Belichick and Mike Vrabel are gonna have to sit down and decide exactly how they wanna approach the season,” said Adam Schefter of ESPN on the Pat McAfee Show. “Those two and Pete Carroll being out there could impact how teams handle their coaching situation.”
Following Quinn’s hiring, even NFL players took notice of Belichick’s non-hiring.
“The ‘greatest coach of all time’ did not get hired out of six head coaching jobs open. I think that debate can be put to rest now,” said Marlon Humphrey, Baltimore Ravens cornerback, on X (formerly known as Twitter).
Belichick had been the NFL’s longest-tenured head coach before parting ways with the Patriots, being with the team from 2000-2023. Additionally, he was the Cleveland Browns head coach from 1991-1995.
Belichick’s career head coaching record is 333-178, including 31-13 in the postseason. Additionally, he has the most Super Bowl wins with eight, was a three-time AP NFL Coach of the Year, and was named to the NFL’s 2000s and 2010s All-Decade teams.
On top of his coaching, Belichick was named Executive of the Year in 2021.
Diana Russini of The Athletic reported that, during the hiring process in Washington, Belichick was heavily considered for the job. Ultimately, they decided on Quinn.
“This is going to be one of those tweets we look back to when the Commanders finish 6-11 next year and say ‘wtf were they thinking?’,” said one NFL fan on X.
