Throughout this season, there has been a patch that reads “NKH” on the right side of the Kansas City Chiefs‘ jerseys. But what is the story behind that patch and the person it honors?
Let’s take a look at not only that patch but also why it is closely aligned with another patch on the left side of the Chiefs’ jerseys.
What Does the NKH Patch Represent?
The NKH patch was added to the Chiefs’ jerseys this season as a way to honor former owner Norma Knobel Hunt. Hunt was the wife of Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt, who passed away in 2006. Lamar Hunt has been honored by the Chiefs since 2007 with a patch that reads “LH” on the left side of their jerseys.
Explaining Tribute to Norma Hunt on Chiefs Jerseys
Norma Hunt became a minority owner of the Chiefs following her husband’s death. Her four children each owned 24.5% of the team, with Hunt owning the final 2%.
She was the only female member of the “Never Miss a Super Bowl Club,” a group of fans that had attended every Super Bowl since 1967. She had attended the first 40 Super Bowl games with her husband and continued to go to the games following her husband’s passing.
She was also indirectly linked to the creation of the name “Super Bowl.”
The first two games in the history of the Super Bowl were actually called the “AFL-NFL World Championship Game.” But after she had given some Super Ball toys to her children, the name inspired Lamar Hunt to propose the name change of the title game to the league.
And just like that, the Super Bowl name was born.
Hunt, also nicknamed the “First Lady of Football,” passed away at the age of 85 this past June. But the Hunt name, as big as any in the NFL during the Super Bowl era, remains strong within the Chiefs and the league.

The Hunt children remain owners of the Chiefs, with Clark Hunt serving as CEO and main decision-maker of the franchise.
