How Loud Is Ford Field? 2023 NFL Playoffs See Fans Set a New Decibel Record

The Detroit Lions hadn't won a home playoff game in 32 years and the crowd at Ford Field responded last week. But just how loud did it really get?

Detroit Lions fans at Ford Field were ready to get rowdy, there was no doubt about that. Last week as the Lions defeated their former star quarterback Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams, the Lions faithful brought the energy the entire time. In the team’s first playoff win in 32 years, the fans played a huge part in bringing the noise all game long.

But just how much noise did they actually bring? With thousands of win-starved Lions fans in attendance, surely there was going to be some noise records broken. That’s just what happened last weekend, with a chance to do so again there in the Divisional Round clash with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

    How Loud Is Ford Field?

To date, the loudest Ford Field has ever gotten in its existence came in Week 2 of this season. While the Lions hosted the Seattle Seahawks, the stadium reached 127.5 decibels. However, the Lions lost that game despite the noise which sullied the record-breaking performance by the fans.

Fear not, though — Lions fans in attendance for last week’s playoff win against the Rams shattered the previous record and did so twice in the same game.

The loudest cheer of the game came while announcing Jared Goff in the starting lineup before kickoff as he ran out of the tunnel. The crowd got to a deafening 133.6 decibels. That level of noise is comparable to a 747 plane engine at takeoff and is the fourth-loudest ever recorded at a stadium.

The second time the fans broke Ford Field’s noise record came at the conclusion of the game after the team secured the victory. It was slightly less loud than at the beginning of the game with a level of 129.6, but still plenty loud enough to break the record from earlier in the year.

“It was probably the best I’ve ever been a part of,” Dan Campbell said Monday. “So much of it was the fact that the thing started an hour before the game and it was just four hours of nonstop barrage of the fans just going off…what a special, special environment. I mean for anybody that was there, you’ll never forget that. You will never, for the rest of your life, that will be something you’re talking about. That was special.”

If the Lions continue to play the way they have been lately, the old record that was just set may be in jeopardy once again.

    World Record Decibel Level

What the Lions fans were able to accomplish last weekend was impressive, but as far as fan noise goes in the NFL, it wasn’t the most impressive ever recorded. That title, along with a world record, is held by Kansas City Chiefs fans for a noise performance they put together in 2014.

The world record decibel level set by Chiefs Kingdom is an absurd 142.2 decibels. Lions fans now have a benchmark to try and reach. While they have a ways to go before hitting that number, no one should put it past them to challenge that number today.
