Week 17's Saturday Night Football will feature the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys. It will also feature Steven and Stephon Gilmore. How are they related?

The NFL‘s Saturday Night Football special in Week 17 will feature two of the NFC’s best. The Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys will face off in a match that has playoff-seeding implications.

However, it’s not just the two teams facing off; two Gilmores will face off. For the Lions, it’s Steven Gilmore, and for the Cowboys, it’s Stephon Gilmore. What’s their history?

Are Steven and Stephon Gilmore Related?

Yes, the two are brothers and were both born and raised in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Stephon, the eldest, was born on Sept. 19, 1990, as opposed to Steven, who was born nine years later on Sept. 17, 1999.

Both attended South Pointe High School, playing football, basketball, and running track. Additionally, both were two-way players, with Stephon playing quarterback and defensive back while Steven played wide receiver and defensive back. Stephon was teammates alongside Jadeveon Clowney and DeVonte Holloman.

After successful high school careers, their careers followed different paths. Stephon graduated high school in 2008 and committed to South Carolina, where he was rated as a four-star recruit by Rivals.com. Steven, on the other hand, was rated as a three-star prospect by 247Sports and committed to Marshall.

Stephon’s career at South Carolina was nothing short of legendary. He was Freshman All-American in 2009, First-team All-SEC in 2010, and third-team All-American in 2011. He compiled 181 tackles, seven tackles, 15 tackles for loss, eight interceptions, and one touchdown.

Meanwhile, Steven had a solid college career. He played a significant amount in five seasons, putting together 200 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, nine interceptions, one defensive touchdown, and three forced fumbles.

Stephon was later drafted by the Buffo Bills with the 10th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. He’s since spent five seasons with the Bills, four seasons with the New England Patriots, and one season each with the Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, and Dallas Cowboys. He has been traded three times.

Specifically during his time as a Patriot, Stephon was the NFL interceptions co-leader in 2019 and was named to the Patriots All-2010s team and All-Dynasty team. He was a part of the Patriots’ Super Bowl LIII Championship.

Steven, on the other hand, is in just his rookie season in 2023. Although he was Second-team All-Sun Belt in 2022 and Second-team All-C-USA in 2021, he went undrafted in the 2023 NFL Draft. He signed with the Lions, where he worked his way onto the Lions’ active roster.
