Should You Start Raheem Mostert or De’Von Achane in Fantasy Football in Week 17?

    Published on

Does the combination of Raheem Mostert's touchdowns and De'Von Achane's declining numbers make the choice of who to start an easy one?

Raheem Mostert continues to score touchdowns, even when an injury limits his time on the field. Meanwhile, De’Von Achane’s production continues to be in decline. So, is it still a difficult choice who to start in the lineups of fantasy football managers?

Should You Start Raheem Mostert or De’Von Achane This Week?

In the Pro Football Network Start/Sit Optimizer, our Consensus Rankings say Mostert is the player to start. His projected 13.7 points include 64 rushing yards, three receptions, and 19 receiving yards. That projected stat line outperforms Achane’s projected 10.9 points.

My ranking for these two running backs aligns with the consensus. In limited action, Mostert has simply been more productive over the last few weeks.

Fantasy Outlook for Mostert This Week

A shin injury limited Mostert to a season-low 19 offensive snaps in the Miami Dolphins’ win over the Dallas Cowboys last week, but he was still productive in that limited time on the field, catching a four-yard touchdown pass in the first half.

It was his fifth consecutive game with at least one touchdown, his longest streak of the season. His 21 total touchdowns — 18 rushing, three receiving — remain tied at No. 1 in the NFL with Christian McCaffrey.

However, although he averaged over four yards a carry (4.2), Mostert was still held under 50 rushing yards for the third time in his last four games.

Mostert still needs two more TDs to become only the 10th different player in NFL history to score 20 or more rushing touchdowns.

But the Dolphins are facing the Baltimore Ravens, which ranks sixth in total defense, but he has allowed at least 120 rushing yards in two of their last three games.

Mostert’s shin injury is something to monitor for the rest of the week, but if he’s able to play, he should be in your lineup, if only for his ability to get in the end zone.

Fantasy Outlook for Achane This Week

Achane is still a worthwhile pick to start in most fantasy football lineups. It’s just when you stack him up against Mostert that it becomes a difficult choice.

Achane was on the field for 55% of Miami’s offensive snaps last week, just the third time this season he has been on the field for at least half of the team’s offensive snaps. Still, his numbers continue to be unimpressive.

He finished with just 24 yards on only seven carries, continuing a trend that has seen his rushing yards decrease in each of the last three weeks. Over his last four games, Achane’s rushing yards have gone from 73 to 47 to 32 to 24.

Even his pass-catching skills were held in check last week, as Achane finished with just one reception for seven yards.

The PFN Start/Sit Optimizer projects Achane to finish with 50 rushing yards, two receptions, and 17 receiving yards.
