Miami Dolphins Throwback Jerseys Explained: A Look at the Iconic Dolphins Design

The Miami Dolphins are set to host the Dallas Cowboys on Christmas Eve, and they will be doing so dawning their fan-favorite throwback uniforms.

Who doesn’t love a throwback uniform? For the Miami Dolphins and their fans, it’s usually a resoundingly positive reaction whenever the team decides to dawn their iconic classic look. Dolphins fans are in luck once again as the team is set to host the Dallas Cowboys on Christmas Eve and will be doing so wearing the beloved all-white throwback uniforms.

For a second time this season, the Dolphins will be sporting the look that all fans shout from the rooftops that they believe should be their permanent look. The first of which came in October against the New England Patriots. With a big-time matchup against America’s Team, Miami fans are in for an early Christmas present with their jersey of choice.

A Look at the Iconic Miami Dolphins Design

Throwback uniforms are revered across the NFL. Most of that is due to nostalgia and the feelings that jersey combination conjures up when you see your team wearing them.

However, for Dolphins fans it doesn’t hurt that they’re also objectively one of the best-looking throwbacks the league has to offer.

The all-white and aqua uniforms debuted back in 1966 with it being the team’s customary uniform every year through the 1973 season.

Since the jersey was retired following that 1973 season, the franchise has only opted to bring out the look on occasion, to much dismay of the fan base that loves them. This is the second and final time the Dolphins will wear the jersey combination in 2023.

The last time Miami wore this specific jersey came in Week 8 as they handled the Patriots soundly to the tune of 31-17. Did the jerseys have something to do with the win? While the answer is probably not, there’s no denying that the fans bring a little extra juice when they see their team in them, and maybe the same thing happens for the players as well.

Big Week 16 Matchup for the Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins have yet to beat a team with a winning record this season, but they have another opportunity in Week 16 to put that stat to bed. The Dolphins will host the 10-4 Cowboys on Christmas Eve with a chance to widen their AFC East lead and maintain their potential bid for the No. 1 seed.

It also serves as a chance to silence the critics.

Miami is 0-3 against such teams heading into the week, and while the Dolphins have found a way to get to 10 wins thus far this season, the noise of people discrediting their legitimacy heading into the big-time matchup may be all the motivation the team needs to prove they’re much more deserving than being given credit for.

The Dolphins understand the task at hand and what it will take to get a victory against a Cowboys team that has looked like one of the league’s best at times.

And it all starts with quarterback Dak Prescott. This is something Vic Fangio understands well.

“He’s playing at a very high level. He has been all year. He seems really comfortable in the new offense. Mike (McCarthy) has a really good offense schematically and he does a good job of play-calling it. Prescott is really comfortable in it. They mix the quick game, mix the shots, mix their formations. I think the offense really fits Prescott.”
