NFL Fans Rip Analyst David Carr for Suggesting the Eagles Should Bench Jalen Hurts for Marcus Mariota

NFL analyst David Carr has the unpopular opinion of believing the Philadelphia Eagles should start Marcus Mariota over Jalen Hurts.

The Philadelphia Eagles have the best record in the NFL heading into Week 14, sitting at 10-2. Quarterback Jalen Hurts is also in the MVP conversation. However, according to NFL analyst David Carr, the Eagles should start Marcus Mariota right now. Understandably, NFL fans do not agree.

In 12 games in 2023, Hurts has passed for 2,995 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He’s also added 430 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground. According to Fox Sports, Hurts has the fourth-best odds to win MVP.

However, in the Eagles’ 42-19 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, Hurts took a hard hit and went to the locker room. He was evaluated for a concussion but returned to the game.

With this in mind, Carr believes Hurts needs to get fully healthy. He also believes he isn’t comfortable reading a defense.

“Clearly, Jalen isn’t comfortable reading a defense in a dropback pass, some would say he’s not good at it. You have to have a serious conversation about Marcus Mariota starting right now and letting Jalen get fully healthy. He’d be more productive,” said Carr, on NFL Total Access.

“That’s not even a hot take. It’s just flat out wrong,” said one NFL fan on X (formerly known as Twitter). “This shouldn’t be a hot take,” said another fan.

Mariota has been in the NFL since 2016, when the Tennessee Titans selected him No. 2 overall in the NFL Draft. He has had action in 88 games, amassing 15,672 yards, 92 touchdowns, and 54 interceptions. Mariota has also totaled 351 carries for 2,018 yards and 17 touchdowns throughout his career to this point.

In 74 starts, Mariota has a 34-40 record. He has started games for the Titans, the Las Vegas Raiders, and the Atlanta Falcons. He joined Philadelphia prior to the 2023 season.

Since being drafted by the Eagles in Round 2 of the 2020 NFL Draft, Hurts has started 46 games, with action in 57. He has passed for 10,901 yards, 63 touchdowns, and 29 interceptions. On the ground, he’s had 488 attempts for 2,328 yards and 42 touchdowns. His career record as the starter is 33-13.
