The Detroit Lions entered the 2023 season in very unfamiliar territory — expectations of a Super Bowl contender. After going 8-2 in the final 10 games in 2022, the Lions had the ninth-shortest Super Bowl odds entering this season, and since then, they have gone 8-2 and have a realistic shot at the top seed in the NFC. With seven games left in the season, what do the current Lions Super Bowl odds look like?
Detroit Lions Super Bowl Odds
The Lions currently have the sixth-shortest Super Bowl odds at DraftKings Sportsbook, trailing only the Eagles, 49ers, Chiefs, Ravens, and Dolphins.
- Philadelphia Eagles (+450)
- San Francisco 49ers/Kansas City Chiefs (+475)
- Baltimore Ravens (+850)
- Miami Dolphins (+900)
- Detroit Lions (+1000)
- Dallas Cowboys (+1100)
- Jacksonville Jaguars (+2000)
- Buffalo Bills (+2800)
- Cleveland Browns (+3500)
- Seattle Seahawks (+4500)
Will the Lions Get the Top Seed in the NFC?
The Lions’ best chance at a Super Bowl appearance and eventually winning the Lombardi Trophy for the first time in NFL history would be finishing as the top seed in the NFC. If they finish as the No. 1 seed in the conference, they’ll be awarded with not just home-field advantage throughout the playoffs but a first-round bye as well.
In the last 10 seasons, the only Super Bowl champion that didn’t have a bye in the Wild Card Round was the 2020 Tampa Bay Buccaneers — when we didn’t have full-capacity crowds because of COVID-19.

How realistic is the No. 1 seed for the Lions? Currently, they’re second in the NFC playoff picture, trailing the Eagles by just one game. While the Eagles have four games left in their “gauntlet” against the Bills, 49ers, Cowboys, and Seahawks, Philly has the 20th most difficult schedule remaining compared to the Lions at 18.
Even if the Eagles go on a losing streak and lose control over the top seed, the Lions still have to beat out the 49ers. Although they’re a game behind the Lions and have the Seahawks (twice), Eagles, and Ravens left on their schedule, the 49ers are still firmly in the mix. After a three-game losing streak, the 49ers are fully healthy again on offense, and they’re undefeated this season when they’re at full strength on that side of the ball.
Are the Lions a Good Super Bowl Bet?
The sportsbook offering the best Lions Super Bowl odds is FanDuel at +1300. But even at those odds, I’m not sure it’s worth taking. As impressive as Jared Goff has been this season, if the Lions don’t get home-field advantage, I have a hard time seeing him leading them to victory at Philadelphia or San Francisco in the playoffs.
Although I don’t want to take anything away from the Lions’ success this season, they’re just 1-2 against teams with a record above .500, and one of those wins came against a Chiefs team that was missing both Travis Kelce and Chris Jones. Since then, they have mostly taken advantage of bad teams, although six of their seven wins after Week 1 have been by multiple scores.
I’m not saying the Lions have no chance of winning the Super Bowl; there just isn’t any value in betting them at odds no better than +1300.
