The Detroit Lions‘ running back duo of David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs gives the team one of the very best in the league. They are both versatile players, combining for 193 total yards of offense in the 31-26 win against the Chicago Bears last weekend. They had 112 yards rushing and another eight combined catches for 81 yards.
For fantasy football managers, which one of these players should be in your lineup this week? Here is the fantasy outlook for each player.
Should You Start Jahmyr Gibbs or David Montgomery This Week?
In the Pro Football Network Start/Sit Optimizer, our Consensus Rankings say that Gibbs is the player to start. His projected 14.0 points include 48 rushing yards, three catches, and 25 receiving yards. That projected stat line barely outperforms the consensus projections of Montgomery’s 11.6 points.
Thanksgiving Day is a day for players to show out and have a big game, and with that in mind, look for Gibbs to put on a huge performance on Turkey Day.
Fantasy Outlook for Gibbs This Week
Gibbs returned in Week 7 from a hamstring injury and has since shown the ability that made him the 12th pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. In his last four games, Gibbs has gotten at least 95 total yards of offense, scoring a touchdown in each game. His best game was against the Las Vegas Raiders, rushing for 152 yards and one touchdown.

When the Lions drafted Gibbs, many people wondered if they reached too early to draft him, but he is showing everybody that isn’t the case. He is an excellent rusher, but what separates him from many running backs is the ability to catch the ball. He has 23 catches in his last four games for 179 yards.
His versatility is such an advantage for fantasy managers, elevating his ceiling as high as nearly every back in the league.
