Should You Start Jahmyr Gibbs or David Montgomery for Fantasy Football in Week 12?

Which one of the Lions' RBs -- David Montgomery or Jahmyr Gibbs -- should fantasy managers go with vs. the Green Bay Packers in Week 12?

The Detroit Lions‘ running back duo of David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs gives the team one of the very best in the league. They are both versatile players, combining for 193 total yards of offense in the 31-26 win against the Chicago Bears last weekend. They had 112 yards rushing and another eight combined catches for 81 yards.

For fantasy football managers, which one of these players should be in your lineup this week? Here is the fantasy outlook for each player.

Should You Start Jahmyr Gibbs or David Montgomery This Week?

In the Pro Football Network Start/Sit Optimizer, our Consensus Rankings say that Gibbs is the player to start. His projected 14.0 points include 48 rushing yards, three catches, and 25 receiving yards. That projected stat line barely outperforms the consensus projections of Montgomery’s 11.6 points.

Thanksgiving Day is a day for players to show out and have a big game, and with that in mind, look for Gibbs to put on a huge performance on Turkey Day.

Fantasy Outlook for Gibbs This Week

Gibbs returned in Week 7 from a hamstring injury and has since shown the ability that made him the 12th pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. In his last four games, Gibbs has gotten at least 95 total yards of offense, scoring a touchdown in each game. His best game was against the Las Vegas Raiders, rushing for 152 yards and one touchdown.

When the Lions drafted Gibbs, many people wondered if they reached too early to draft him, but he is showing everybody that isn’t the case. He is an excellent rusher, but what separates him from many running backs is the ability to catch the ball. He has 23 catches in his last four games for 179 yards.

His versatility is such an advantage for fantasy managers, elevating his ceiling as high as nearly every back in the league.

Fantasy Outlook for Montgomery This Week

Montgomery played some great football to start the year, but he injured his ribs and was forced to miss three games. Upon his return, though, he picked up right where he left off, as he ran the ball 12 times for 116 yards and a touchdown.

In the game against the Bears, he rushed 12 times for 76 yards and one touchdown. He is the perfect complement to go along with Gibbs, as he is able to wear opposing defenses down. They have to deal with his power for much of the night, and then here comes the game-breaking speed of Gibbs.

The Green Bay Packers’ rush defense has not been a strength this year, as the unit is one of the worst in the league. Entering Week 12, Green Bay has allowed 134.7 yards per game on the ground, which ranks 28th. This is a quick turnaround for both teams, as the Lions and Packers face off on Thanksgiving — four days after both last played respective games.

Don’t be surprised at all if Montgomery has a solid game on Thursday, but Gibbs is going to be the player to get in the end zone.
