NFL Coach of the Year Odds: Can DeMeco Ryans Challenge Dan Campbell for the Award?

A look at the NFL Coach of the Year odds and the cases for Dan Campbell, DeMeco Ryans, and the other favorites.

One of the more interesting futures markets every year is the NFL Coach of the Year award. Unlike all of the other awards that are decided by on-field production and stats, the NFL Coach of the Year odds are based on what happens on the sidelines, which opens the door to many different opinions on who should win it.

Should it be awarded to the coach who did the best job with the team he had, the coach of the team with the best record, or one who leads their team to a surprise playoff berth, like Brian Daboll did last year with the New York Giants?

Detroit Lions HC Dan Campbell and Houston Texans HC DeMeco Ryans are the top favorites for the award at the moment, but let’s dive into the betting odds and make a pick.

    Dan Campbell (+150)

Campbell has been the leader in NFL Coach of the Year odds since the market first opened. Since then, he has backed it up, as the Lions are an impressive 7-2 on the season and have the fourth-easiest schedule the rest of the way.

The Cowboys are their only remaining opponent with a winning record, so they can easily win 13-14 games this season, and that could lock this award up for Campbell.

    DeMeco Ryans (+275)

While Campbell has remained the betting favorite all season long, DeMeco Ryans has emerged as a strong contender. He has the Houston Texans in contention for a playoff spot in just his first year.

The Texans have been among the league’s biggest surprises this season. They are currently 5-4 and a real threat to challenge the Jacksonville Jaguars to win the AFC South.

Houston is currently only one game behind Jacksonville for the division, has won their previous matchup against them, and has the eighth-easiest schedule the rest of the way. The Texans might not only make the playoffs, but they could win the division as well.

    Mike McDaniel (+650)

Mike McDaniel was a popular preseason pick to win Coach of the Year, and with the Miami Dolphins at 6-3 with the NFL’s leading offense and the favorites to win their division, he remains a strong candidate to win the award.

Still, McDaniel and the Dolphins will need at least one signature win coming up against the Buffalo Bills, Dallas Cowboys, or Baltimore Ravens to help strengthen his case.

    Kevin O’Connell (+750)

Kevin O’Connell has emerged as a strong candidate in recent weeks, but is he deserving of the award after having to climb out of their early-season hole? When the Minnesota Vikings started 0-3 and then 1-4, there were some calls for O’Connell to be on the hot seat.

Five weeks later, the Vikings lost their franchise QB and WR, traded for backup signal-caller Joshua Dobbs, and haven’t lost since. If this winning streak continues and they steal the NFC North from the Lions, O’Connell will get serious consideration.

Mike Tomlin (+1400) and Nick Sirianni (+2000)

These are the only two remaining coaches with odds of +2000 or shorter, and I’m not buying the Pittsburgh Steelers. For Nick Sirianni, the Eagles are doing what the Philadelphia Eagles are supposed to do.

NFL Coach of the Year Pick

While I think the Lions will continue their run with an easy schedule, putting Campbell in a firm position to win the award, the value play at the moment is on Ryans at +275. I bet the Texans to win their division, and if they do, I think Ryans would win the Coach of the Year.
