Daniel Jones Injury Update: When Can the Giants’ QB Return?

    Published on

What is the latest injury update for Daniel Jones, and can we expect the New York Giants QB to be back on the field this week?

The New York Giants have been without QB Daniel Jones since he hurt his neck in their clash with the Miami Dolphins. With backup QB Tyrod Taylor having been taken to the hospital on Sunday, is Jones able to return after being ruled out prior to Week 8? Let’s take a look at the latest injury update for Jones and what it means for the Giants.

Latest Injury Update for Daniel Jones

There has been positive news on Jones’ injury in the past 24 hours. Early on Monday morning, it was reported by Ryan Dunleavy of the NY Post that Jones has now been cleared for contact and actually was ahead of the game on Sunday. Unfortunately, the Giants had already ruled Jones out on Friday of Week 8, so he was not available when Taylor got hurt.

Jones has missed each of the last two weeks since the game against Miami. Despite being listed as limited in practice for all six sessions, Jones was not able to suit up on Sunday. However, during that stretch, head coach Brian Daboll had made it clear that when Jones was cleared for contact, they would be looking to get him back as soon as possible.

With Taylor now potentially facing an absence himself, the Giants should be able to turn back to Jones for their Week 9 game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Daboll told reporters that Jones met with a spinal surgeon on Sunday and was cleared to play in Week 9. He confirmed that the expectation is that Jones will be a full participant in practice on Wednesday.

What Does Jones’ Status Mean for the Giants?

With Taylor out, it was backup QB Tommy DeVito who came into the game for the Giants. He did not fare very well, though, completing just two of his seven pass attempts for -1 yards and a 39.6 QB rating.

If Jones wasn’t going to be back for Week 9, New York would likely be looking for a veteran QB to come in and take over at the position.

However, it looks like Jones will be back under center. It’s a big boost for the Giants’ offense, but this hasn’t been a good season for Jones in the year after getting a big contract. He has averaged just 176.8 passing yards per game with two touchdowns to six interceptions.

Jones’ QBR has been the lowest of his career so far at 39.4 and a sack rate of 15.6%. Taylor has been performing marginally better, but not by much, so the Giants’ offense is not suddenly about to take a leap.

Still, having Jones back should be a considerable upgrade over either starting DeVito or bringing in a veteran to learn the offense in one week.
