Last week, we were actually waiting all day for Sunday night, as we had a marquee matchup between the Miami Dolphins and the Philadelphia Eagles. This week, that is certainly not the case, with the Chicago Bears vs. Los Angeles Chargers squaring off on Sunday Night Football.
One storyline for his matchup is the head coaches — both Matt Eberflus and Brandon Staley could be on the hot seat, as each of their teams are off to disappointing starts to the season. But where do they stack up in the first head coach fired odds?
NFL First Head Coach Fired Odds
Currently, the Washington Commanders’ Ron Rivera is the favorite to be the first head coach fired this season, with Staley not far behind. Here are the current NFL first head coach fired odds:
- Ron Rivera (+200)
- Brandon Staley (+250)
- Josh McDaniels (+400)
- Matt Eberflus (+600)
- Matt LaFleur (+900)
- Dennis Allen (+1200)
- Mike Vrabel (+1400)
- Todd Bowles (+2000)
- Brian Daboll/Kevin O’Connell/Bill Belichick (+3300)
- Sean Payton/Arthur Smith (+4000)
- Kevin Stefanski (+5000)
Is Matt Eberflus on the Hot Seat?
In 24 games as head coach of the Bears, Eberflus has a 5-19 record, which is the worst of any head coach over that stretch.
Although the Bears weren’t projected to be a playoff team going into the season, they have still certainly performed below expectations. However, they’re coming off a 30-12 win over the Las Vegas Raiders and have won two of their last three games after starting the season 0-4.

After this week, the Bears have two winnable games in a row against the New Orleans Saints and Carolina Panthers and could be getting Justin Fields back for those contests. It seems unlikely that Eberflus will get fired in-season.
But his chances of holding onto the job for 2024 largely hinge on the development of Fields and this Bears team improving in the second half of 2023.
Is Brandon Staley on the Hot Seat?
With the Chargers sitting at 2-4 coming off a playoff loss in which they blew a 27-0 lead, it’s no surprise to see Staley as one of the favorites to be the first head coach fired. Although they have dealt with injuries, as the Chargers always do, this team is way too talented on paper to be underperforming like they have.
It also seems like every week, there is a head-scratching coaching decision from Staley, and despite him being a defensive-minded coach, they have one of the worst units in the NFL.
As long as the Chargers remain in the playoff hunt, it’s unlikely that Staley will get fired midseason, but if they fail to win a playoff game once again in the Justin Herbert era, it almost seems like a lock he isn’t their coach for 2024.
This team has been underperforming for too long, and their coach has been responsible for too many losses for the organization not to make a change if they turn in another disappointing season.
