The Miami Hurricanes unexpectedly lost starting quarterback and 2024 NFL Draft prospect Tyler Van Dyke ahead of the team’s Week 8 contest against the Clemson Tigers. Will Van Dyke be ready to return against the Virginia Cavaliers in Week 9? Here’s the latest.
Tyler Van Dyke Injury: Updates on Status of Miami Hurricanes QB
Early last week, it was assumed that Van Dyke would have no issues playing against the Clemson Tigers. But later in the week, a leg injury flared, and Van Dyke was deemed a game-time decision and ultimately ruled out ahead of the contest.
The Hurricanes ended up getting the win despite Van Dyke’s absence, but the productive QB is scheduled to be back with the team this week. Head coach Mario Cristobal said the following about Van Dyke during his Monday press conference.

“Last week caught us off guard during the week. He doesn’t have anything serious, but if it takes a certain turn, it can delay you, so that’s really what ended up happening. We’re in a good place right now.”
Along with this clarifying statement, Cristobal confirmed that Van Dyke is “good to go” for the team’s Week 9 contest against Virginia.
The Cavaliers are riding high, coming off an upset win against Drake Maye and the North Carolina Tar Heels. Thus, it’ll be good for Miami to get their star QB back in time for what could be a tougher matchup than expected.
Van Dyke’s 2024 NFL Draft Stock Climbing
After his breakout 2021 campaign, Van Dyke was seen as a potential Round 1 pick in the ensuing NFL Draft cycle. After a regression in 2022, he almost fell off the NFL Draft radar entirely.
Now, in 2023, Van Dyke has worked his way back and is safely a draftable prospect, hovering outside of the top 10 positional range.
In six games played so far, Van Dyke has completed a career-high 70.5% of his passes at 9.4 yards per attempt for 1,721 total yards, 16 touchdowns, and six interceptions.
Van Dyke is tough in the pocket, his arm is live, and at its peak, his situational precision is stellar. He’s also flashed a heightened degree of anticipation up the seam this year — a trait that wasn’t always prevalent on his 2021 and 2022 tapes.
If Van Dyke can keep building around his physical profile, he has the high-level arm strength and arm elasticity to command early-round capital in the 2024 NFL Draft.
In the most recent full 7-round 2024 NFL Mock Draft at Pro Football Network, Van Dyke went in the fourth round, with the 106th overall pick, to the Green Bay Packers, where he’d back up and potentially battle with Jordan Love for the starting job.
