Jalen Hurts’ College Career
Beginning his Alabama career in 2016, Hurts was the first true freshman quarterback to start a game under Nick Saban. Leading the team to a championship appearance, he threw for 2,780 yards and 23 touchdowns in Year 1.
He led the team to another championship game in 2017, where he ended up being benched in favor of Tua Tagovailoa. With Tagovailoa taking over the starting role, Hurts stuck around at Alabama for one more season before transferring to Oklahoma for his final year of college football.
Hurts’ time at Oklahoma would be what defined his college career. After lacking passing skills at Alabama, he was able to develop into a dynamic quarterback who contended for the Heisman Trophy.
Leading the team to a 12-2 record and a College Football Playoff appearance, Hurts threw for 3,851 yards and 32 touchdowns as a Sooner. He set the school’s single-season record for points scored by a quarterback (126) and led the nation in yards per pass attempt (11.8).
After being benched as the starting quarterback at Alabama, the season was monumental in Hurts’ football career.

Hurts was in the running for the Heisman, an award given to the best college football player each year, but ultimately, he did not take home the trophy after his phenomenal year at Oklahoma.
Joe Burrow was awarded the Heisman after he led LSU to a title, and Hurts took second place. Burrow earned 841 first-place votes and won in a landslide, as Hurts earned 12.
Burrow had a terrific season, throwing for 5,671 yards and 60 touchdowns, putting the Heisman well out of reach for Hurts.
Hurts was the 53rd overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft, getting selected in the second round. He led the Eagles to a Super Bowl in 2022 and totaled 3,701 passing yards and 22 touchdowns.
The Eagles are off to a 5-1 start in 2023, and Hurts has 1,572 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and seven interceptions. The team will take on the 5-1 Miami Dolphins, where Hurts will face former teammate Tagovailoa for the first time in the NFL.
