Just how good is San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy, and how much of his success is due to Kyle Shanahan and his talented set of playmakers? That’s the question you hear every week, no matter how well Purdy plays or how impressive his final stat line is.
In a league where the best quarterbacks have generational arm talent and were former high draft picks, it’s a former Mr. Irrelevant who is leading one of the two remaining undefeated teams in the NFL.
Given some of the skepticism surrounding Purdy’s value to the 49ers offense and how much of their success is due to having Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, and George Kittle, Purdy wasn’t on the NFL MVP radar heading into the season.
Despite being the starting quarterback of a Super Bowl contender, Purdy had just the 20th-best NFL MVP odds going into the season. To put that into perspective, those odds were equal to Daniel Jones.
But sitting at 5-0 and coming off a four-touchdown performance on Sunday Night Football, is Purdy now a legitimate MVP candidate?

Brock Purdy NFL MVP Odds Update
Currently at DraftKings Sportsbook, Purdy is now +700 to win NFL MVP, tied for the 3rd-shortest odds with Josh Allen and Jalen Hurts, and trailing only Patrick Mahomes (+450) and Tua Tagovailoa (+475). Going into tonight, Purdy was +2000 to win the award but has now jumped Lamar Jackson and Justin Herbert to play his way into the top five in betting odds.
You can say that next week against the Cleveland Browns will be a big test for Purdy and this 49ers offense. But that was also said going into this week vs. Micah Parsons and this Cowboys defense, but Purdy led the starting offense to 42 points.
As long as the 49ers keep rolling, Purdy could keep his place in the MVP conversation and perhaps strengthen his case. The award usually goes to the quarterback on the best team in the regular season, and I don’t think anyone would be surprised if the 49ers finish with the best record.
