    Titans vs. Colts Prediction

The big storyline leading into today’s Titans-Colts matchup centers around the return of Colts running back Jonathan Taylor. Armed with a new three-year contract extension and activated off the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, Taylor should have an impact on this game, even if his carries are limited.

The Titans have been on opposite ends of 27-3 scores each of the last two weeks, with last week resulting in a big win over the Cincinnati Bengals. The Titans may have solved their offensive issues, gaining a season-high 400 yards just one week after being held under 100 yards in a loss to the Cleveland Browns.

Titans QB Ryan Tannehill has had a miserable start to the season, ranking 31st out of 34 qualified quarterbacks in passer rating at 74.9. But the reality is that Tannehill has been two completely different quarterbacks this season. In the two Tennessee wins, Tannehill has a completion percentage of 77.6% and a 113.1 passer rating. Compare that with his numbers in the two Titans losses — 49.2% completion percentage and 43.2 passer rating.

It probably would help the Titans’ cause to have DeAndre Hopkins going. Four games into the season, Hopkins has yet to have 70 receiving yards or a receiving touchdown in any game. Dating back to last season, Hopkins has failed to reach 70 receiving yards in six straight games, the longest such streak of his career.

The Titans are also facing one of the worst defenses in the league so far in the Colts. The Colts rank 29th in total defense, allowing nearly 400 total yards per game (390.5). They also entered Week 5 in the bottom 10 in the NFL in both pass defense (28th) and rush defense (23rd).

Offensively for the Colts, the return of Taylor should excite the home crowd for this matchup, but it’s not as if Taylor has a history of success against the Titans’ defense. In five career starts versus the Titans, Taylor is averaging less than 50 rushing yards a game (49.2) and has only one touchdown.

So, once again, the success of the Indy offense could fall on the shoulders of rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson. And so far, Richardson has been able to answer the call.

In three games this season (he missed one in the concussion protocol), Richardson had seven total touchdowns (three passing, four rushing). Over the last 30 seasons, only two players have had more total touchdowns in their first three career games — Patrick Mahomes (10) and Marcus Mariota (8).

The Titans’ offense has been up and down all season. If you believe it has solved its issues and last week was what we should expect to see the rest of the season, the pick here is clear. I think the Titans are the better team, and they will prove that against a weak Colts defense.

It’s tough to put your money on Ryan Tannehill, who has been as erratic as any quarterback in the league, rookie or veteran. But running back Derrick Henry has dominated the Colts, with seven 100-yard rushing games versus Indianapolis since 2010, the most 100-yard games versus any opponent over that span.

The Colts will be fired up at home. But until their defense shows they can step up to the challenge, I’ll be laying the points here.
