How Tall Is Johnny Wilson? Florida State WR Could Be a Historic NFL Prospect

    Published on

When he enters the 2024 NFL Draft and makes the leap to the NFL, Florida State's Johnny Wilson will be one of the tallest WRs in league history. How tall is he?

If you watch the Florida State Seminoles, one of the hottest teams in college football, then you no doubt see wide receiver Johnny Wilson towering over teammates and opposition alike. How tall is Wilson, and just how unique of an NFL Draft prospect is he?

How Tall Is Florida State Seminoles WR Johnny Wilson?

Of all the wide receivers ever to hit the NFL Draft circuit, Wilson is in the top percentile when it comes to height. He stands at a looming 6’7″ and weighs almost 240 pounds. He also has 36″ arms and 10″ mitts for hands, per Bruce Feldman of The Athletic.

Wilson has the size of a tight end, and yet, he plays the wide receiver position for the Seminoles. He uses his frame well both in the slot and on the boundary. Naturally, at his size, he can be a devastating mismatch for smaller defensive backs.

Wilson caught 43 passes for 897 yards and five touchdowns from Jordan Travis in 2022, averaging over 20 yards per catch. And in 2023, he remains an imposing vertical threat and an after-the-catch weapon alongside Michigan State transfer Keon Coleman.

Now in his fourth year of eligibility, it’s widely expected that Wilson will declare for the 2024 NFL Draft. He’ll be taller than former NFL greats like Calvin Johnson and Randy Moss.

In fact, Wilson will be the second-tallest wide receiver in NFL history, behind only Hall of Famer Harold Carmichael, a 6’8″ behemoth who logged almost 9,000 receiving yards with the Philadelphia Eagles in the 1970s and 1980s.

Can Wilson’s Unique Traits Land Him in Round 1?

Wilson’s rare height naturally places him in exclusive historical company. But does Wilson have the composite profile, outside of his size and length, to field Round 1 capital in the 2024 NFL Draft?

On my board, Wilson graded out as a Day 2 prospect heading into the 2023 season. Coleman is the visibly superior 2024 NFL Draft prospect, but Wilson’s size makes him easy to project in a niche role.

He’s a stellar RAC threat with his explosiveness and physicality, and his wingspan allows him to beat defensive backs at the catch point.

Along with his RAC and vertical utility, Wilson is also one of the best run blockers in the 2024 WR crop. Where Wilson falters is as a route runner and as a hands-catcher.

He’s not overly flexible or nuanced as a separator, and while he has the reach to dominate 50-50 balls, his hand technique is still very inconsistent, resulting in drops.

At his current rate of production, Wilson likely settles in the Day 2 range, but it’s not out of the question that a team could take him in the Top 50 if they put a particular emphasis on size, explosiveness, physicality, and speed. Wilson has an excess of those qualities.
