The Cleveland Browns already lost one of their key contributors when Nick Chubb went down with a severe knee injury earlier in Monday night’s game. Now, pass rusher Za’Darius Smith appeared to suffer a serious leg injury of his own.
Za’Darius Smith Injury Update
Smith was injured on a play where Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett completed a 25-yard pass to George Pickens.
Smith may have suffered a non-contact injury. He couldn’t put weight on one of his legs as he was helped to the sideline.

After spending some time in the blue medical tent, Smith reappeared on Cleveland’s sideline. He was spotted with his helmet trying to get back into the game, but the Browns’ staff prevented him from returning.
Fortunately, after Cleveland scored on its ensuing drive, Smith was able to come back into the game along with the rest of the team’s defensive starters.
Seeking to bolster their pass rush opposite Myles Garrett, Cleveland sent two fifth-round picks to the Minnesota Vikings this offseason in exchange for Smith and 2025 sixth and seventh-rounders.
Smith, 31, was a Pro Bowler for the Vikings last season after posting 10 sacks and 24 quarterback hits. He began his career with the Baltimore Ravens and has also spent time with the Green Bay Packers, totaling 54.5 sacks during his nine-year NFL career.
