While an old line continues to pop in my head that goes “if it’s too good to be true, it probably is,” judging by Mahomes’ history in season openers, this appears to be a no-brainer. And you’re on the plus side with the odds!?
Mahomes has thrown at least three touchdowns in all five season openers for the Chiefs. Yes, the uncertain status of the game’s best tight end — Travis Kelce — due to a knee injury may make a three-TD game seem more difficult. But keep in mind that in his season opener last year, Mahomes had five touchdown passes, with only one going to Kelce. In fact, Mahomes was able to find backup tight end Jody Fortson for a TD connection. So if you’re open, Mahomes will find you.
This year’s Chiefs squad also appears to have a talented and deep wide receiver group, so another three-touchdown game through the air still seems like a strong play here.
The Detroit Lions’ pass defense ranked near the bottom last season, allowing 245.8 passing yards per game (30th in NFL) and 26 pass touchdowns (T-23rd). Detroit also was in the bottom half of the league in sacks, ranking tied for 18th (39), so Mahomes should have time to throw in this game.
