Quarterback Will Grier played lights out in his final performance with the Dallas Cowboys, leading the team to a 31-16 win over the Las Vegas Raiders in their last preseason game of 2023.
Grier led the league in passing yards (640) in the preseason, showed his value, and produced solid tape for teams to view well before the Trey Lance trade that put the nail in the coffin for Grier’s Cowboys tenure.
With Lance taking the third quarterback spot, Grier will hit the market and can be an asset to the right team that will set him up for success. Grier is a mobile QB who can release the ball quickly and make deep passes.
When asked what he wanted to tell any team considering adding him to their roster, he said, “I think my play speaks for itself — what I can do on the field. I’m a team-first guy, and I’d say to them to ask the people around me.”
Which teams could be a good landing spot for Grier after spending the last two seasons with the Cowboys?
Possible Landing Spots for Will Grier
Los Angeles Chargers
With former Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore now in Los Angeles with the Chargers, this could be a perfect landing spot for Grier.
Moore knows Grier’s strengths and play style to make him an easy fit and addition to his offense. Grier would be familiar with Moore’s schemes and offensive system.
The Chargers depth chart currently has Easton Stick and Max Duggan backing up Justin Herbert. Grier could be an easy addition to this room.
Washington Commanders
Another team that has ties and a history with Grier is the Washington Commanders, specifically through head coach Ron Rivera.
Rivera was with the Carolina Panthers in 2019 when the team drafted Grier in the third round.
With Sam Howell being the team’s starting quarterback, there is an opportunity to learn and grow as insurance for the quarterback room.
Although Grier probably won’t beat out Jacoby Brissett, he could take the third spot as he would have with the Cowboys.
New England Patriots
Sticking with the theme of past history playing a part in Grier landing on another roster quickly, reports stated that the Patriots had an interest in drafting Grier during the 2019 NFL Draft.
If true, their scouting grades and analysis for Grier could help him find a spot on the roster. Even if it isn’t, Grier has shown growth since his rookie season that could be a good fit for New England.

With Mac Jones heading into his third season under the team’s new offensive coordinator, Bill O’Brien, and the focus on quarterback development, Grier could make an immediate impact.
The team’s current backup quarterback is Bailey Zappe. Grier could quickly fight for a spot as a backup in the quarterback room.
As a cherry on top, Grier could reunite with a familiar face in running back Ezekiel Elliott, as he is with the team on a one-year deal. Elliott is projected to be a backup to Rhamondre Stevenson, meaning Grier could get a fair amount of practice reps with Elliott.
