Urban Meyer’s name has made plenty of headlines in the past few decades. He’ll likely make a few more after Netflix’s “Untold: Swamp Kings,” a documentary about Meyer’s Florida championship teams, is released on Tuesday, Aug. 22.
Meyer is known for a lot of things, most recently for his disastrous one-year tenure with the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, Meyer’s success in Gainsville elevated him to the national spotlight — for better or worse.
Urban Meyer’s Professional Career
Florida won the national championship in 2006 and 2008, led by Meyer and QB Tim Tebow. After the 2010 season, Meyer retired from coaching due to health and family reasons. In his six-year reign as head coach, there was certainly a lot of drama, which seems to follow Meyer and should be featured in the documentary.
Meyer’s coaching career didn’t end there, as he took over the Ohio State job in 2012 and departed the position, not on the best terms, in 2018. Meyer’s 2021 season with the Jaguars had a new twist and turn each and every week.
Nonetheless, Meyer made plenty of money in his coaching career and as a household name for so long.
How Much Did Urban Meyer Make Coaching?
Meyer started his coaching career as a defensive backs at St. Xavier high school in Ohio. He made the leap to college in 1986, serving as a graduate assistant at Ohio State.
After being an assistant coach for over a decade, Meyer became the head coach at Bowling Green for two seasons. He jumped to Utah, leading the Utes to an undefeated 2004 season and later taking the Florida job.
Initially, Meyer signed a seven-year, $14 million contract with Florida that had a large bonus for winning the national championship, which he did. He signed a second deal in 2009 that paid him $4 million annually over six years.
When he took the Ohio State position, Meyer received a $4.4 million-per-year contract, which included retention and performance bonuses that he also earned during his tenure.
Meyer signed a five-year deal with the Jaguars. NFL coaching salaries are tougher to find than college coaches, but various sources estimated he was expected to make between $9-12 million. Although, he didn’t see most of that money after Jacksonville fired Meyer after 13 games.
Urban Meyer’s Net Worth
Meyer’s net worth is estimated to be around $35-40 million based on various resources.
After his time at Ohio State, Meyer joined Fox Sports as a part of their “Big Noon Kickoff” crew and rejoined them following his year in the NFL.

What will “Swamp Kings” tell us about Meyer? Will it be any more entertaining than the social media reaction to his night out at a bar following the Jaguars’ loss to the Bengals? The world awaits on Tuesday.
