Dallas Cowboys 53-Man Roster Projections: How the Cowboys’ Second Week of Camp Has Impacted the Roster

With the Dallas Cowboys starting Week 3 of training camp and their first preseason game, we look at how much the final roster could change.

The competition continues to heat up for the Dallas Cowboys heading into Week 3 of training camp. With the ratio of rookies finding their strides and veterans competing for their roster spots, this has been a productive camp for the team.

    Quarterback

This room has been the most consistent throughout camp since it’s clear that Cooper Rush will remain the backup to Dak Prescott. Will Grier has had some strong moments at camp, but we should see more of how he handles game-time situations in preseason.

    • Dak Prescott
    • Cooper Rush

    Running Back

This competition continues to be a room that changes almost every day and will get more clarity as the preseason continues.

Rico Dowdle continues to showcase his speed and has stayed healthy. He hasn’t received any return reps as he did in OTAs and minicamp. Head coach Mike McCarthy has also praised Dowdle for his work during camp. Meanwhile, Malik Davis has still had a strong camp but is getting returner reps.

Since we know an emphasis on this team is versatility, this could be a difference-maker. It will be interesting to see who gets return reps during the preseason.

Deuce Vaughn continues to be the people’s choice and has had a great camp. He’s seen returner reps, which he’s been doing since OTAs and minicamp.

    Wide Receiver

At this point in camp, it’s hard not to imagine Jalen Tolbert and KaVontae Turpin not cycling into the offense at the start of the regular season. Turpin could be a short-yardage receiver for Prescott because of his speed and shiftiness.

Seventh-round draft pick, Jalen Brooks, has been turning heads at camp this week, especially after his first touchdown. Simi Fehoko has started to find his stride again after returning from a quad contusion, but he’ll need to shine in preseason with the reps he gets.

    Tight End

The tight end room has been consistent throughout camp. Luke Schoonmaker is still on the active/non-football (NFI) injury list because of the plantar fascia, with McCarthy announcing he had a minor setback last week. Overall this room is coming together, especially with Peyton Hendershot’s resurgence in the red zone.

    Offensive Line

Zack Martin is still holding out from camp, which doesn’t seem to be changing anytime soon. When the offensive line is going up against the Cowboy’s defensive line, it’s clear that Martin’s absence is missed.

Terence Steele is ramping up and getting more rotation. As noted before, his return from knee surgery has been incredible to watch.

    Interier Defensive Line

The trenches continue to be clogged with this line. Dallas’ defensive line is shored up and has leveled up the Cowboys’ defense.

    • Neville Gallimore
    • Johnathan Hankins
    • Mazi Smith
    • Osa Odighizuwa
    • Quinton Bohanna

    EDGE

This is still one of the most top-tier groups on the team, and with Micah Parsons in the fold, how can it not be?

Dorance Armstrong participated in the team’s walkthrough once again. After coming off of a career-high year in sacks last season, it will be fun to see him back in the mix.

    Linebacker

During Week 2 of camp, Damone Clark had some highlights that make him hard to ignore. Meanwhile, DeMarvion Overshown has been getting reps with the ones and special-teams reps.

Jabril Cox had a great week and showcased strength in tackles for loss. Keep an eye on the jump he is about to make going forward.

    Cornerback

Trevon Diggs and Stephon Gilmore continue to impress in locking down the Cowboys’ secondary. They have been great in man coverage, as expected.

Eric Scott Jr. continues to shine with pass breakups during camp without having any pass interference calls made, which is a plus for him.

Kelvin Joseph is tight on coverage with the second and thirds but is struggling with the starters. He is someone that will be a make-or-break in the preseason.

    • Stephon Gilmore
    • DaRon Bland
    • Nahshon Wright
    • C.J. Goodwin
    • Kelvin Joseph

    Safety

This room hasn’t changed either because it keeps getting stronger.

Israel Mukuamu has shown his hand at forcing incompletions during this camp.

Patrik Walker tweeted a video of Donovan Wilson no longer in a walking boot. So we’ll see if we see him at all during camp. Regardless, this shouldn’t impact his roster spot.

Dallas Cowboys 53-Man Roster Projection | Special Teams

With the Cowboys parting ways with kicker Tristan Vizcaino, Brandon Aubrey remains the only kicker on Dallas’ current roster. But don’t be surprised if this changes soon. McCarthy said the Cowboys are always “open for business” regarding a veteran kicker.
