According to an NFL spokesperson, Dallas Cowboys running back Ronald Jones will be suspended for two regular-season games without pay after breaking the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.
Jones can still participate in practices and preseason games but will not be able to play in Weeks 1 and 2 of the regular season.
If the Cowboys see him as a viable backup running back to Tony Pollard, he could return to the active roster on Monday, Sept. 18, for Week 3 against the Arizona Cardinals.
Ronald Jones Suspension Impact on Dallas Cowboys RB Competition
During Monday’s news conference with Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, he noted two guys who caught his eye in the battle for the backup running back spot. Those players were Rico Dowdle and Malik Davis, as McCarthy made no mention of Jones.
Running back Deuce Vaughn is another name that has become a potential pathway for the Cowboys to take if they want a young player with special teams potential as well.
Jones brought the most veteran leadership within the competition.
Jones’ Career So Far
Jones played six games with the Chiefs last season. He ran the ball 17 times for 70 total yards and scored one touchdown.
In 2021, Jones was a viable backup to running back Leonard Fournette with the Buccaneers. During his four season in Tampa Bay, he ran 488 times for 2,174 yards with 18 touchdowns.
