Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs is a Cowboy for life and spoke for the first time since he put the pen on paper and finalized his new contract ahead of camp.
Diggs and the Cowboys agreed to a five-year contract extension worth $97 million, including a $21.25 million signing bonus, and is worth up to $104 million with incentives.
Trevon Diggs’ Only Focus Is Football
Diggs talked about the weight of getting this deal done before camp lifted so that he could focus on football, calling it a blessing for him, and felt a deal would get done ahead of camp.
“Regardless if it was done in camp or not, I still would have been going about my work the same way,” said Diggs.
He said he’s doing everything he can to help the Cowboys win a Super Bowl, and when asked if he is at the top of his game, he said, “hell no, I’m just starting.”
His main goal is to stay consistent and continue building on his career, wanting to leave his mark as one of the best cornerbacks to play football.
Trevon Diggs Working With Stephon Gilmore
Diggs talked about his excitement to work with Stephon Gilmore, saying that his addition made the defense better.
He also mentioned how Gilmore and he had a good relationship before he came to Dallas.
“I’ve always asked him questions, asked him for help, sent him tape all the time having that relationship with him. Now I can have that relationship with him, and he’s literally right here. I can watch tape with him and see how he works,” said Diggs.
Gilmore spoke about Diggs’ new deal after practice and said that his advice to the young CB now is to stay focused and do what he’s been doing.
“He’s super talented, has great ball skills, and some of the stuff he does you can’t teach,” said Gilmore when asked what he likes about Diggs’ game.
Trevon Diggs Being His Own Kind of Leader
It’s widely known that Diggs isn’t a vocal leader, and he doesn’t have plans to change that with this contract. He said he will stay true to himself and continue to be competitive in his own way.
“I talk to my peers if they need anything; I’m just to myself sometimes. I try to lead in different ways,” said Diggs when discussing how he leads his teammates by example.
Diggs’ Family Ties
During negotiations, Diggs talked about leaning on his brother, Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs.
“I am thankful to have a brother who has been through this whole process because it is nerve-racking, and it’s a blessing now that all of the weight is off my shoulders.”
Aside from being a brother, Trevon is also a son and a dad. He said when he found out about the extension on Monday, he called his mom and son, Aaiden Diggs, who were happy for him.
“It made me feel good. It made me feel like a proud father just being able to be able to take care of my family and take care of my son and take care of my mom. That’s always been the main goal,” said Diggs.
