Brian Johnson is Sirianni’s choice to fill the shoes left by Steichen, who is now the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. Johnson was promoted from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator following his success working with Jalen Hurts. Johnson and Hurts have a special connection that dates back nearly 20 years, when Hurts was just four years old.
While Johnson doesn’t have any experience as a play-caller in the NFL, he spent multiple seasons as the offensive coordinator for several high-powered offenses in college. That includes Florida, Houston, and Utah.

Johnson is heading into his first season as offensive coordinator for the Eagles. Back in 2021, Sirianni hired Johnson to be Philadelphia’s quarterbacks coach, which was Johnson’s first opportunity to coach in the NFL.

It’s clear that Johnson has made a strong impression on Sirianni and especially Hurts. His work as the QBs coach helped push Hurts to an elite level that many weren’t expecting him to reach so quickly. As mentioned, Steichen was Philadelphia’s OC before Johnson replaced him. As expected, Steichen was a hot commodity for head coaching vacancies this past offseason and was quickly hired by Indianapolis. Prior to their stint together in Philadelphia, Steichen and Sirianni had worked together with the Los Angeles Chargers.
Philadelphia’s offense went to another level when Steichen took over play-calling duties, as he took advantage of Hurts’ ability to run the ball. It will be exciting to see what Steichen does with rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson in Indianapolis.
