    Chris Murray NFL Draft Profile

    • Position: Offensive Lineman
    • School: Oklahoma
    • Year: Fifth-Year Senior

Murray was a four-star recruit out of Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, California. After receiving over a dozen offers from Power Five schools, Murray chose to play college football at UCLA.

Given his status as a high-quality recruit, Murray was able to get on the field a bunch as a freshman. He played in 12 games but was rather ineffective. Murray allowed 21 QB hurries, five QB hits, and two sacks. He primarily played right guard but got in some work at center as well.

As a sophomore, Murray once again played 12 games, but his play undoubtedly improved. He allowed 13 hurries, no hits, and three sacks, exclusively playing right guard.

Following his sophomore season, Murray elected to transfer to Oklahoma. It was an interesting move, as Murray’s playing time in 2020 drastically decreased. He appeared in just five games all season.

In his senior year, Murray was back to his usual involvement. He played in 13 games, allowing 12 hurries, two hits, and two sacks.

While Murray did not qualify for redshirt status in any of his seasons, he was able to exercise his extra year of eligibility due to COVID. So, Murray returned to school for a fifth year.

As a super senior, Murray appeared in 12 games, allowing eight hurries, one hit, and two sacks.

Tony Pauline’s Scouting Report for Chris Murray

Strengths: UCLA transfer who broke into the starting lineup as a true freshman. Sets with a wide base, sinks his butt, and blocks with great leverage. Displays good recognition as well as awareness and plays with a nasty attitude. Moves well on his feet, quickly pulls across the line of scrimmage, and is effective blocking in motion.

Explosive, fires off the snap into blocks, and works to finish off opponents. Stays square and seals defenders from the action. Works his hands throughout the play.

Weaknesses: Possesses average size and lacks growth potential. Not a great athlete despite his ability to block in motion.

Overall: Murray was a hard-working lineman who consistently got the most from his ability on the college level and showed a lot of skill on the move. He lacks great upside, yet he has enough potential to make an NFL roster as a backup guard.

Oklahoma OL Chris Murray Current Draft Projection

On Tony Pauline’s Big Board, Murray ranked 312th overall and is projected to go undrafted. With a 3.24 grade, he is Pauline’s 21st guard prospect in this class.

Based on Pauline’s grade, Murray is well outside the 224 base number of picks in every draft. Even accounting for compensatory picks, there will be nowhere near 300 players drafted.

Given Pauline’s grade and projection, it seems very unlikely that Murray will get drafted. As a UDFA, he will face quite the challenge of making an NFL roster.

There’s no such thing as having too many offensive linemen. That gives Murray more of a shot than he should have given his positional rank. Even so, it would be a pretty significant upset if Murray ever made an NFL roster.
