Who Are the Best Quarterbacks To Draft in Dynasty?
Long gone are the days of Ben Roethlisberger, Eli Manning, and Tom Brady. Quarterbacks in today’s NFL need to be able to move and create on their own. Extensions of the run game and with the rules of fantasy football being what they are today, QBs that can pick up rushing yardage move to the top of the draft boards in fantasy football.
With a plethora of young and talented QBs currently in the NFL, there are values all across the board for dynasty managers. Let’s discuss three players that you should be eyeing going into your startup drafts.
Justin Fields didn’t accomplish much as a passer in 2022, but there are plenty of reasons we can point to for why the production simply wasn’t there. Chicago’s offensive line was one of the worst pass-blocking units in the league, his receiving corps wasn’t anything to write home about, and the state of the Bears’ defense simply put the offense in negative game scripts time and time again.
Nevertheless, Fields was a star for fantasy football purposes due to the rushing production. Even with missing two games last season, plus the offense not really being predominantly run-heavy to begin the year, Fields went out and put up 1,143 rushing yards with eight rushing touchdowns on 160 attempts!
Based on Fields’ rushing production alone, he finished the season with 162.3 fantasy points. For context, Kenny Pickett ended the season with 158.9 total fantasy points. This simply goes to show just how important the rushing ability is for fantasy football and the edge that it can provide dynasty managers.
The comparisons of Fields in 2023 to Jalen Hurts in 2022 are certainly there to be made. The addition of DJ Moore to this offense, plus the addition of solid offensive linemen in front of him, should do wonders for Fields and his passing ability. At this time next year, we could easily be looking back and wondering why Fields was going as late as he did in startup drafts.
The hype for Anthony Richardson may already be getting a little bit out of control, but it’s hard to blame dynasty managers. Richardson is literally the most athletic QB we’ve ever seen enter the NFL. His performance at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine shocked the football world, and after receiving top-five draft capital in the 2023 NFL Draft, Richardson seems poised to start the season right out of the gates for the Indianapolis Colts.
For Shane Steichen, who just helped turn Hurts into one of the best fantasy QBs out there, he’s going to find ways to utilize the incredible athleticism that Richardson has to offer, which will translate to immediate fantasy production.
In Year 1, there will be growing pains with Richardson — as there typically are with any rookie QB — but from a fantasy standpoint, the rushing output is going to provide an incredibly high floor. With a solid receiving corps around him, plus one of the best offensive lines in the NFL when everyone’s healthy, Richardson could be going ahead of Josh Allen in startup drafts within a year or two.
Significantly further down the board, Sam Howell appears to be the guy for Washington in 2023. Howell’s tape at North Carolina signaled that he could be a future NFL starter, but he inexplicably fell to the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
Looking ahead to this season, if he’s going to be given the opportunity to be the Commanders’ Week 1 starter, Howell could quickly find his way into starting fantasy lineups. Terry McLaurin, Curtis Samuel, and Jahan Dotson are going to make life easier on him as he transitions to the speed of the NFL, plus Howell’s shown that he can pick up yardage on the ground as well. At UNC in 2021, he had 828 rushing yards and 11 rushing touchdowns.
Howell is essentially free right now in dynasty startup drafts. As a QB3 or QB4 on your Superflex roster, he’s worth taking a shot on in the later rounds.
