Of the 30 NFL stadiums, 10 are domes or have a roof of some kind (including five that are retractable). It can be difficult to remember which teams play in a dome and which play in an outdoor stadium, so we put together this list to break it down. Let’s examine every NFL stadium to figure out which are indoor venues and which are outdoor fields.
NFL Teams With a Domed/Indoor Stadium
The following 10 stadiums feature a dome or roof of some kind.
- State Farm Stadium | Arizona Cardinals
– Retractable - Mercedes-Benz Stadium | Atlanta Falcons
– Retractable - AT&T Stadium | Dallas Cowboys
– Retractable - Ford Field | Detroit Lions
- NRG Stadium | Houston Texans
– Retractable - Lucas Oil Stadium | Indianapolis Colts
– Retractable - Allegiant Stadium | Las Vegas Raiders
- SoFi Stadium | Los Angeles Chargers, Los Angeles Rams
- U.S. Bank Stadium | Minnesota Vikings
- Caesars Superdome | New Orleans Saints
The NFL has certain rules in place regarding retractable roofs to ensure these teams don’t have a competitive advantage.
In these stadiums, the home team must notify the referee or highest-ranking league official working a game an hour and a half before kickoff whether the roof will be open or closed. At least one hour prior to kickoff, the roof must then be in its set position.

However, there are unique situations where a team must change their plans last minute. This occurred recently at AT&T Stadium as the Cowboys were preparing to face the Texans on Monday Night Football in Week 11.
The Cowboys initially planned to play the game with an open roof for the first time in two seasons. However, while the roof was being opened, a large piece of metal fell onto the field due to 30-mile-per-hour winds.
Fortunately, this was three hours before kickoff, so the stadium was mostly empty and nobody got hurt. Dallas opted to keep the roof closed and secure any potential debris to ensure nothing else would fall during the contest.
“I know we opened it long before any fans or anybody is in there,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told the Associated Press. “The reason they do that is to make sure everything is working to avoid those kinds of risks if there’s any fans or anybody in here…
“They wouldn’t have done this game, or started this game, had there been any risk at all. Not only the NFL wouldn’t, but I wouldn’t if there was any risk at all. And there was no risk at all when we started the game.”
