49ers DL Charles Omenihu Arrested on Suspicion of Misdemeanor Domestic Violence: What We Know

San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Charles Omenihu was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor domestic violence. Here's what it means.

San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Charles Omenihu was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor domestic violence by the San Jose police on Monday afternoon, according to Robert Salong and Cam Inman of the Mercury News.

Police were called to his home by a woman claiming to be his girlfriend, who told officers that Omenihu “pushed her to the ground during an argument.”

The police news release does not describe any visible physical injuries but mentioned that she complained of arm pain. Omenihu has been served an emergency protective order. He is required to stay away from the woman while the order is in effect.

The 49ers have released a statement, stating: “We are aware of the matter involving Charles Omenihu and are in the process of gathering further information.”

What’s Next for 49ers DL Charles Omenihu?

It is possible that the NFL or the 49ers could suspend Omenihu immediately as they gather more information about his case, putting his status for Sunday’s NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles in jeopardy.

It is also possible that commissioner Roger Goodell places Omenihu on the Commissioner Exempt List, which would prevent Omenihu from practicing or playing games, but would preserve his salary.

UPDATE: Per Tom Pelissero at the NFL Network, there is no change to Omenihu’s status. The league will continue to review the matter under the Personal Conduct Policy.

Omenihu, who was drafted by the Houston Texans in the fifth round of the 2019 draft, was traded to the 49ers during the 2021 season. He has played a key role as a heavy rotational lineman who has spot-started in case of injury.

He played a big role in San Francisco’s playoff wins, with seven pressures over 39 pass-rushing snaps, including two sacks. In his absence, the 49ers could lean on second-round draft pick Drake Jackson, Jordan Willis, or Kerry Hyder Jr.
