Philadelphia Eagles Offseason Preview 2023: Free Agents, Cut Candidates, and Team Needs

A first look at the Philadelphia Eagles' 2023 offseason, with a rundown of their free agents, cut candidates, cap space, and team needs.

Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman built arguably the most complete roster in the National Football League in 2023. That was hard.

Even harder: Keeping it together — or, in a perfect world, improving upon it. Is he up to the task? We explore in our Philadelphia Eagles offseason preview, with a look at the franchise’s free agents, cut candidates, and team needs.

Philadelphia Eagles Offseason Preview: Re-Up or Reload?

As you’ll see in a moment, the list of marquee Eagles free agents is long.

    Like, really long.

As in 85.2% of the Eagles’ running back-generated rushing yards and 77.8% of the team’s rushing touchdowns from RBs. As in their top two snap-eaters on the offensive line. As in five veteran defensive linemen who have 306.5 career sacks and 457 career tackles for loss between them.

We could go on and on, but we don’t want to totally bum out Eagles fans with their season just freshly over.

But suffice it to say, big changes are coming to the City of Brotherly Love in 2023.

The good news? The Eagles own four of the 2023 NFL Draft’s first 100 picks, including the 10th overall selection they acquired from the New Orleans Saints last spring. Roseman will need to hit on a high percentage of them, as the available Eagles cap space is limited.

    Eagles’ 2023 salary cap space

According to Spotrac, the Eagles were under the 2023 salary cap by $9.8 million as of mid-January, giving them the 15th-most cap space in the NFL.

That figure reflects $27.4 million in dead cap and $5.4 million in rollover space. It is based on an estimated $225 million NFL salary cap in 2023.

The exact cap figure will not be known until the NFL announces it in early March.

    Eagles Free Agents 2023

The following Eagles players are set to hit free agency. (Restricted free agents are noted with the abbreviation RFA, exclusive rights free agents by ERFA.)

    Defensive Tackle Javon Hargrave

Spotrac’s calculated market value: Three years, $60.5 million ($20.1 million AAV)

Overview: It’s hard to complain about Pro Bowl snubs when your team gets eight players picked, but Hargrave certainly has a good case for being included. He was Philly’s best pass-rushing defensive tackle — which is saying something on a roster that includes Fletcher Cox and Jordan Davis.

    Running Back Miles Sanders

Spotrac’s calculated market value: Two years, $14.4 million ($7.2 million AAV)

Overview: Talk about maxing out. Sanders was always a dangerous, valuable piece of the Eagles’ offense. But with a career year in his contract year, Sanders is now in line for life-changing money. This is shaping up to be the year of the running back contract.

    Potential Cut Candidates

    • CB Darius Slay ($4.8 million in cap savings)
    • DE Derek Barnett ($2.6 million)
