How Many Draft Picks Did the Eagles Have in the 2023 NFL Draft?
The Eagles had seven draft picks in the 2023 NFL Draft. Most importantly, the Eagles’ picks were frontloaded. Four of their seven selections came within the first 66 picks — including two first-rounders — and another just outside the top 100 (105). For a team that just made the Super Bowl, that’s as good as it gets.
The Eagles, who are already a strong team, made some strategic moves during the draft. They traded up to the ninth overall pick to select Jalen Carter, a talented defensive tackle from Georgia.
They also lucked out when Nolan Smith, a promising edge rusher, fell to them in the later part of the first round. On Day 3, they picked up Kelee Ringo, another Georgia player. Overall, the Eagles seem to have made some smart choices that could help them continue to succeed.
Who Did the Eagles Draft in 2023?
All eyes were focused on the trio of Bulldogs defenders included in the Eagles’ 2023 class: Carter, Smith, and Ringo. These players have had great success in college and have proven to be elite athletes, as well as valuable contributors at the three most important positions on defense. Additionally, each player fits well with the Eagles’ aggressive defense strategy.
Although Carter was the most controversial player in the draft, due to various self-inflicted setbacks during the process, such as being charged with a misdemeanor that resulted in a year of probation and gaining nine pounds between the NFL Combine and his pro day, he was still considered the best overall player in the class. Thus, Philly is banking on his undeniable talent.
It is more likely that Smith and Ringo will make contributions in 2024 rather than 2023, as the Eagles have a strong lineup in both positions. Despite some physical limitations, both players bring experience and physicality that will prepare them for their roles when called upon.
The Eagles also have Tyler Steen, Tanner McKee, and Moro Ojomo competing for backup roles in positions of need. Another potential contributor is Sydney Brown, a playmaker from Illinois who can provide run support and has the ability to play as a slot cornerback like his predecessor C.J. Gardner-Johnson. It wouldn’t be surprising if Brown starts despite being a third-round pick.
